Default New LP on Radio 3

On Saturday they will be reviewing a recording which was made in the '70s, unreleased at the time, out on CD (presumably in the '80s) and has now, for the first time, been released on vinyl LP.

All this was announced on their breakfast show this morning but sadly I can't remember the work. 'Cello, I think - it was rather early.

I don't see a reference to this on the Radio 3 Schedules page but maybe it'll get trailed again before Saturday. Could be an interesting listen.

Amazing! Vinyl has really had a come back, I didn't realise it ventured into the world of Classical music, I wonder if this is just a fad or here to stay.
It's ironic I got rid of my vast record collection as I started collecting CD's.

There has always been an audiophile market in classical LPs. I'm surprised there are any grams in R3 studios nowadays though. Maybe they've digitised the LP and will use the files for programme production.

The DJ said they were going to wheel out their last remaining turntable for the job!

Is this just a copy of the CD or mastered from the original material?

Usual practice these days is to cut from digital files, but some, notably the Electric Gramophone Company, go the whole hog with original analogue tape played through a contemporary valve cutting system. Mind you, they also produce exact facsimiles of the original sleeve and sell the whole caboosh for several hundred quid...

Graham's post reminded me of another Radio 3 programme that might be of interest to forumites. On Saturday morning at 10:35, 'Record Review' is doing a bit about restoring old recordings.

'RR' includes a 'Building a Library' slot, where a guest compares various recordings of a piece of music. They often include a recording that's quite old (early 20th Century) and I always marvel at how good the quality is. So, if I remember, I'll listen in.

I wonder if the last item (11:45) is what Graham heard about.

To celebrate Independent Record Store Day R3 Record Review is not in the studio but coming from a specialist music store in North London with a formidable audio set-up and "where they have turntables".

The item mentioned in the OP is about be broadcast.

It is indeed in BBC Radio 3's "Record Review" programme, commemorating the 10th annual "Record Store Day".

The recording in question is the world premier recording of Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No 2, made in 1966 by the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (exiled from the USSR in the 1970s), with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov.

The original tape was apparently saved from destruction by hiding it in a mislabelled box, and Warner Classics have just issued it on vinyl LP for the first time, though it has appeared on CD before.

More infromaton here and here.

Of that period there was also a Melodiya recording of a great performance of Kabalevsky's second cello conc, with Daniil Shafran as soloist. It was released as the 4th side of Shostakovitch's 7th symphony boxed set.

If you want to hear a cello in attack-mode!

A bit of a goer! And great enough music that real music lovers cease to bother whether it's on wax cylinders or memory sticks.
