Default Heathkit HWA-202-1 rebuild

Needed a project and a 2A ish 13.8v supply. A nice compact Heathkit unit appeared on eBay in a right state so I grabbed it with the intention of repair and rebuild.

Capacitor had leaked, the wiring was atrocious, it had a terminal strip hacked on the back and it had been painted black. Decided to just strip it entirely and rebuild.

Temporarily soldered a couple of new filter caps to the board to test it until the correct ones arrived and it works fine as does the transformer so off we go...

Internals, minus the rotten cap as supplied:

First step is fix the big hole in the box and attach an IEC inlet because the old power cable was loose and i don't like integrated cables.

The resettable fuse and existing mains loom are being discarded entirely!

More soon...

Not so empty. Note the size difference of the original cap silk screen Vs the new cap. Higher value and more volts as well!

Added 4mm binding posts to the back for output.

Quick load test. Only have enough resistors around to pull 600mA. More arriving on Tuesday with some stick on feet.

Going to drag it to one of the local shops and get some paint matched for it, strip the case down and respray it next week.

From the front it looks original with nice shiny chrome bezel.

Now I better clean up the living room table
