1 valve radio
Hi, does anyone have any diagrams of a 1930s 1 valve radio with simple circuitry. also does anyone have any photographs of the innards of one. I would like one that uses a 4 pin valve,
thanks |

Re: 1 valve radio
Hello.
I have Frank C. Jones Radio Handbook from 1937 in scanned .jpg format, can be converted to .pdf The whole book is 42 jpg's (2 pages in one jpg) about 22 mb. Find attach a one valve circuit, using a No 19 valve, maybe that is what you are looking for. |

Re: 1 valve radio
Correction to my last post.
I do not have the whole book, the whole book is over 200 pages, I only have 81 pages and the cover. Found two more books, "What To Build" Vol. II No. I, also with a 1 valve circuit, and a very nice book in .pdf format, "Knock-out Receivers" 65 pages 25 mb, by Arthur H. Lynch, very detailed, cabinet making, chassis lay out, drilling patterns and lots of informative photos and drawings. I was happy to "re discover" this book again after forgot about it for several years. When you see those construction and the beauty of bygone receivers, it encourage and enliven you to build them. Let me know if you like to have those books and I can mail it to you. von Vulpes |

Re: 1 valve radio
I have a book by FJ Camm which has one in. This then progresses, with additions to the circuit, to a two valve etc etc

Re: 1 valve radio
Here is a one valve radio that I restored to operation that was built in 1922.
http://makearadio.com/restoration/pa...estoration.php I drew the schematic and put it up on the page. The radio originally used a 00A valve which is a "soft detector" or gas filled valve. I didn't have one of those so I used a #30 valve as a replacement. I had to add a grid leak resistor so that the grid wouldn't block. I later plugged in a 01A and lit it with a 4 volt battery. That worked very well too. There is nothing like having a MW radio that uses 4 controls to select the station! This would be a good radio to build if you want the olde time feeling. Best wishes, Dave

Re: 1 valve radio
wow I really want to try building a short wave radio... I have a spare ECL83 valve, could I use this to make one? if not what valves could I use??

Re: 1 valve radio
actually, I have a wrecked Bush SRP31 record player with no turntable and just the amplifier... could I build a reciever in the bit where the turntable was and have it as a radio?? I would rather it be FM... or maybe FM and shortwave... is this possible?

Re: 1 valve radio
Actually I just found this project was discussed a few pages back and it has a scan of the whole book linked...which could've saved me £2.50

Re: 1 valve radio
You can pretty much make SOME kind of radio with ANY valve.
I was going to say any Triode, Pentode, Hexode, Heptode, tetrode etc. But of course a big aerial and valve diode instead of "cat's whisker" will do something! |

Re: 1 valve radio
I was thinking of using my Bush SRP31 record player's amplifier which takes two ECL83 valves, removing the turntable and everything inside (as it's beyond repair) and building two circuits, one for FM and one for SW witrh a switch inside to alternate. Would I still need to put a valve in the circuits? because surely the valves in the amp will suffice? because the valves are for amplification, right? or do they have another function?

Re: 1 valve radio
A VHF radio with 2 x ECL 83 might be possible
Assuming a triode part of an ECL83 works at 100MHz! 1 triode mixer/osc 1 Pentode IF amp two OA47 or 1N4148 as discriminator 1 triode audio preamp 1 pentode headphone amp. In Radios Valves are used as Oscillator Mixer (or combined Mixer /Oscillator) AM or FM detectors (though by 1960s Germanium diodes, OA81 etc took over) RF amps /AGC IF amps / AGC (AM) IF amp Limiters (FM) Audio preamp Audio driver Sometimes mains rectifiier Sometimes Magic eye tuning indicator Maybe even AFC |

Re: 1 valve radio
A one valve Acorn 956 running a super regen circuit works amazingly well on VHF FM frequencies. A two valve circuit is very sensitive and often better than complex tuners.

You may wish to have a look here:

Re: 1 valve radio
This Russian valve is readily available on eBay
http://makearadio.com/tube/russian-loop-radio.php you can probably use 1j18b, 1j17b, 1j29b either. One valve regen radio |
