Default BVWS Website

The new-look BVWS website is now online at http://www.bvws.org.uk/. You will see that I have dragged it into the 21st century at last, with a modern clean look that was influenced by the Bulletin.

So far it is the previous website content converted to the new style etc. Apart from the recent bulletins there is NO new content. I have more event photos (thanks to Terry and Mike) and recent auction results to add in the next few days, plus some more photos on the front page image changer thing and the 2012 events, then this first phase is just about done.

The second phase will be putting much of the information into a database with a bespoke content management system so that the whole committee can make updates more easily. This would also some search options etc.

Then the third phase is the eCommerce facilities, selling parts and publications online, new memberships and renewals online etc.

So there is still a long way to go!

I welcome your thoughts and comments etc on the new style website as it is now please.

Well done Paul, modern without any un-necessary gizmos - it does make it a lot more readable.
I know these things take a lot more effort than people realise, so thanks from me as well.

Excellent effort

Looking forward to being able to renew on-line and buy bits and bobs.

Looks very nice, Paul - good effort . I like your 'image changer thing' on the front page!

Thanks for keeping us up to date with future plans - they sound pretty exciting.

Nice job, Paul.

Clean and fast home page.

I know how much time has to be spent on such things, having done it for a living in what seems to be the far distant past.

Whilst not a member (thinking of joining ) I look at the site occasionaly. It is easier to read etc. However the images of vintage radios stutter/shimmer before coming into focus. I found it a little off putting. It may be down to my dire BB connection. This isnt a critisism, but an obsevation,Andy.

It's always difficult to know what's 'Artistic' and what's a fault!

I'm not a member either and the site (old or new) doesn't inspire me to part with my money. It would be useful to have more information about the benefits of membership. The sample 'Bulletin' is so out-of-date that it probably fails to do the current ones justice.

Having recently joined the BVWS I am looking forward to online ordering of parts, as to whether it is worthwhile joining all I can say is a resounding YES. It is worth it for the Trader sheets and all the other stuff on CD's alone, best money I have spent in ages. Norman

I am hoping to get a more recent sample bulletin on the website soon (that one has been on there for years), and I agree that we do need to give more information about the benefits of joining. They are in the to-do list.

As I said in the original post, this is just the original content in the new style for now. It's not a finished job.

The fading photos use javascript so it may be due to the speed of your computer and what else you have running. It's smooth on both my PCs with Firefox and Internet Explorer. It should take less than a second to fade one out and the next in. The fades are made up of 20 steps but at effectively 40 frames/changes per second should look smooth.

Like most people, I think the new BVWS website looks good and is very promising. Of course, everyone wants something out of an organisation they join but there is more than enough benefit I would suggest. The quality of the Bulletin alone might be worth the subscription without the other aspects. In a sense, although it's owned separately by Paul S, this Forum is an indirect outcome as well. Given that the BVWS is effectively a national society [as distinct from other excellent published magazines] and can represent the vintage "fringe" it could be said that is a strong argument for membership in itself anyway.

Dave W

PS I'm not being paid for this advert.
I am not always in complete agreement with every aspect of either setup!

That's my opinion as well, Dave. Going to events and meeting like folk is a bonus.

Carl has just sent me a PDF of the Autumn 2008 Bulletin which I'll put on the website instead of that much older sample tomorrow. It is a good example of a recent bulletin and includes a wide range of articles.

Hi, a big thank you, it is so much better, clearer and so much more interesting, it makes you want to remember it and come back.
For me and it's just my opinion the old site was simply forgettable.
Jolly well done.
Cheers.
