Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices - NOW REMOVED
While doing the forum software update today I have set up support for the Forum Runner mobile app. This allows access to the forum from mobile phones and tablets (Apple and Android) using an app rather than web browser (though of course you can still use a web browser).
Details are here http://www.forumrunner.net/ I haven't tried installing the app myself yet so don't know how it works. I understand there is a free version which allows you to read the forums, and a paid-for version at $1.99 which also allows you to post in the forums. Please be aware that I do not get any of that $1.99 and cannot support Forum Runner in any way. All I have done is install their access code and register the forum with them. If you have problems you will need to contact the publishers of Forum Runner to resolve them. In Forum Runner's directory you need to look for "UK Vintage Radio" (it didn't allow enough characters for the full name) which will have the icon as attached. Please let us know how you get on with it (and on what devices) by posting here, as it will be useful for other potential users. |

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
When browsing the forum from a compatible mobile device with the browser you will probably get a notice about Forum Runner support, offering you the option to install the app. If you cancel this it shouldn't nag you again.

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
There are lots of negative comments in the Google Market app. It may be more use for a device with a very small screen like a phone - I find that the standard browser interface is usable enough on a 7" tablet.

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
Yes, I have no problems with the browser on my tablet, apart from the dropdown search boxes etc not working.
From the Forum Runner support forum it does seem to be fairly inactive now. It seems that Internet Brands (owners of vBulletin) bought it and the original developer left. Once we get a few more opinions I'll decide whether to keep it or not. I can turn off the prompt when visiting from a browser - that's a setting in the forum admin. |

I've downloaded the app onto my Samsung phone.
At first sight it seems a bit clunky but that might just take some getting used to. I can't see how to post a reply without quoting. Last edited by Mike Phelan; 11th Aug 2014 at 10:32 am. Reason: "Post Reply" button bottom left. |

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
Hi Paul,
Just downloaded the app on the iPhone and it seems ok, different to the web page but on a small screen navigation is better. I don't need to keep expanding the page to read the posts. When I am reading the forum on the phone I will use the app and see how it behaves. Hi Peter, I don't know if the app is different on a Samsung device but on the iPhone there is a arrow at the top right, that gives the possibility to reply amongst other things. Frank

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
Every time I visit the forum via the browser on my Kindle Fire tablet I get the "nag screen" inviting me to download the app, despite always choosing "cancel". It's not a problem, but I just thought I'd mention it.
Terry (This only happens if I've powered down the Kindle between visits)

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
Yes, this seems to be normal behaviour. I rarely reboot my Kindle so it's not a big issue for me, but it may be for some people.

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
The setting description says it will only nag once. It's probably cookie based though, and if the cookie disappears when the device is restarted then it wouldn't know and will ask again.

Using on an iPad now and it is nice to use, good clear layout, different but I quite like it. I will use the app on the tablet and phone for a while.

One item I cannot find is an easy link to the service data downloads, anyone else know where it is on this app? I have the DVD's but it is nice to be able to point the service data download link to new users.

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
That's just a link/image on the website so it won't be in the app. There is no options as forum owner to change how and what appears in the app.

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
Further to my previous post, I have stopped and started the forum several times today, sometimes simply letting the Kindle go into standbys, and sometimes turning it fully off. Not once has the nag appeared! All very odd.

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
I'm nagged on my Android tablet at every visit, whether or not I've powered down or logged off in between.
Not a problem, but inconsistent with the description. |

Re: Forum Runner - forum access for mobile devices
I suspect it varies with the browser being used, and perhaps the version of Android too.

Thanks Frank
I've just installed the app on my iPad and I can see how to reply as you suggest. Still haven't seen the facility on my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone though. P |

Something seems to be removing the post header at random.

Looks as if it's a Forum Runner issue.
