Forgive me if I don't get the measurement notion right....

The distance between centers of the knobs is 8.2mm each one. Or.... 3 1/4inches.

I think you mean 82 mm., or 8.2 cm.

8.2 mm. is about the thickness of a smartphone.

If I couldn't get the 'correct' mechanism, my inclination would be to try and find something similar which would fit; possibly from a termite-wrecked Victrola.

Fitting something too modern but obsolete would seem like the worst of both worlds.

That conversion must have been done by a homesick Co. Durham ex-pat!
