My late father bless him, innocently refered to an awl as 'a naul'.

I feel I must pass on a little note as being quite badly Dyslexic. I have great difficulty in pronouncing and spelling many words, through no fault of my own.
I suspect many of these mis- pronounced issues come from people like myself that struggle with getting words right.

Don't get your coat, you are correct

"The word solder originates in Middle English. The Latin origin is the word solidaire, meaning to “to make solid,” which is where the -l- in solder comes from.

Solidaire (v.) – to join, be united, standing together, or interdependent.

The word more immediately comes from the Anglo-French word soudure. This Anglo French word is similar to the contemporary French verb souder. The word eventually evolved in English to its current spelling.

The modern form of the word solder in English is a re-Latinization from the early 15th century. The -l- was dropped on the way to Old French, which was common (for example, pulverem to poudre, collum to cou, calidus to chaud, etc.). Note that the -l- in solder is typically sounded in British English.

Souder [soo-deh] (v.) – to solder or to weld."

Are you sure about the "-aire" at the end? My Latin dictionary gives it as "solidare".

A word I always had trouble with (and I still had to look it up now to see how it is spelled) is Cardioid when dealing with microphone sensitivity patterns.

An engineer i used to work with always referred to a circuit diagram as a knitting pattern. No one has yet called a telephone a tefelone or even a telling-bone.

Ronnie Barker did a very clever sketch as spokesman for the Pismununtiation Society; for all those people who have difficulty pronouncing their worms properly

I have a friend who persists in asking if I am going to the next BVWS meeting in Harpington.

Catweazle used to call it a telling-bone.

When my son was little (around 4) he was fascinated by my oscilloscope. He couldn't pronounce the word properly and his infant mind translated it into silly-scope.

When I was at tech a classmate would refer to "Po-toe-metres" .
Best of all was when (as an apprentice) I took a cup of tea upstairs to one of the senior engineers , He said "Ooh you must be psychedelic , I was just going to make one". To this day I don't know if he was joking or if it was a genuine mistake. I told one of my mates and to this day he still says it!
In E.F Benson's " Mapp and Lucia " They always said "Au reservoir" when departing....
And in "Corrie" there was Hilda's "Muriel" ... She also said Elsie's new coloured bathroom suite was " Phonographic" .

I distinctly remember my first boss (in a radio and TV repair workshop) referring to a Normende as a 'No Mendy'.

When I worked at Thorn, one of the older wiremen told me that a certain guy had a collection of 'magazines' - you know what I mean. And amongst them were some phonographic ones..

I don't think Macaroni has been mentioned yet in this thread, though I have heard the likely effect of consuming too much of it used to describe the TF2370.

Wang (computers) reportedly once did an ill-judged advertising campaign in the UK which used the huge two-word strapline 'Wang Cares".

Don't get me started on the Nintendo Wii...
