Capacitor codes - help needed
Hi, I'm in the process of recapping a Bush VHF64, there must be 20 or more Hunts capacitors of various values, most rated at 400v, using up my small stock. Up until now I've bought Vishay capacitors rated at 630V from Farnell, which have easy to understand markings in pF, uF. I'd seen a reference to Cricklewood Electronics in a thread here and thought I'd give them a try, avoiding Farnell's minimum order of £30.
I ordered (all 400v) 20 X 10nF(0.01uF), 20 X 47nF (.047uF), 5 X 2.2nF(.0022uF) and 5 X 4.7nF (.0047uF). They've arrived and I've received 20 marked 103k, which I assume are the 10nF, 20 marked .047/10, which are the 47nf(?), 5 marked 472K, which I assume are the 4.7nF and 5 marked 2200/10, which I assume to be the 2.2nf (2200pF). The problem I've got is that the 20 I 've assumed are the 47nF are about 60% smaller packages than the ones I think are the 4.7nF !!! Is it me, or has there been a picking mistake at Cricklewood? Is there a list of the various different codes to be found anywhere? |

Re: Capacitor codes - help needed
You can't tell very much from the relative sizes of the components if they are from different manufacturers, which presumably they are if they're using different conventions to indicate the value.
I have some 0.047uF 400V caps which are absolutely tiny - I couldn't believe it when they first arrived. Paul |

Re: Capacitor codes - help needed
Thanks for the chart Humphrey, It looks as if they are correct. They are different manufacturers, the smaller 0.47uF ones are by AV, the others (0.047uF) which are more than twice bigger have no makers name. I should have said in my previous note that they were all polyester, yellow bodied types. They just did'nt look right!

Here's basically the same thing on a little print out pocket card.

Re: Capacitor codes - help needed
I ordered some capacitors from Cricklewood a few months ago and was confused by the size of the components. They were all 400v but the .01uf (marked 103) was twice the size of the 0.1uF (marked 100k). Checking them on my Marconi bridge proved that the values were correct so it was just the make of capacitor that governed the size. Don't worry, the components are marked correctly.
Rich.

Re: Capacitor codes - help needed
I've come across this code on a number of different capacitors. The first two digits represent the value, and the third digit represents the number of zeroes, the overall value being in pF. The use of the letter "K" (which doesn't seem to stand for 1,000) and the voltage rating only add to the confusion!
Colour codes have also been used, the same colours as for resistors. Again, the value is in pF, so yellow-purple-yellow means 470,000pf (0.47uF or 470nF).

Hi
B = +/- 0.1% C = +/- 0.25 D = +/- 0.5 F = +/- 1% G = +/- 2 J = +/- 5 K = +/- 10% M = +/- 20 Z = +80 to -20% Must be for electrolytics I guess ATB Tony |

Re: Capacitor codes - help needed
Hope I'm not being too forward here but I cleaned up the text files from Dallaslaff and Tony and combined them so that I could print them out for the workshop; I'm always having to calculate these in my brain.
Thought I'd post the finished result here if no one minds. |

Well, that's saved me a job!
It was one of the things on my list for this morning. Regards,

Popped Mikes text file into PDF format that will print out on a single page. Another rainy Sunday morning

Re: Capacitor codes - help needed
Thanks for this Mike and Colin, I'll print them out and stick one on the workshop wall, i'll save having to count noughts, taking shoes and socks off!

Thanks Colin, a lot neater and easier to read than my version.
