Another vintage Laptop
Cleaning some cupboards out in my shop ..and there lurking at the back was a very nice leather laptop bag.
A very small bag ...so obviously an old lappy. Assuming it isn't empty. Well ..it wasn't. A complete Toshiba T2400CS ...but does it work ?? After 2 power ups it started..with a borrowed 15v psu brick from one of my other antiques. Not the brightest of screens but then it isn't a TFT. After some 10 minutes of norton file checking and a failed attempt to connect to a network that doesn't exist. I was rewarded with windows for workgroups 3.11 not sure of hard drive size as yet but it is functional. ..and doesn't have much ram. A 486 cpu if memory serves.. But still a nice find and all port covers and hinges are intact. I may try and pimp it out a bit more and maybe try installing win95 From previous encounters with this series ..the floppy drive rarely fares well ..on account of they are belt driven and the rubber melts. We shall see. I'll post a photo if anyone is interested later. What a treat to see those flying windows appear after all these years, rgds VS Last edited by ViperSan; 18th Jun 2019 at 3:28 pm. |

Re: Another vintage Laptop
I'd love to see a picture, VS. Some of the older laptops had a pleasingly chunky look.

Re: Another vintage Laptop
Coming right up Andrew..
My entire Toshiba collection from this period with a single photo of the new arrival. The grey one is 510CDT There are 2 x T4900 CT 1 x T4500C ..and the latest addition the T2400CS ready for their photoshoot All have been fully restored.. I even built a battery NiMh for the T4900s to share.. all have working floppies but not the originals later non belt drive units.. The T4200CS is as yet unknown floppy wise The 510CDT has a working CD drive also. I do love these old brick lappies. One of the T4900s uses a CF card as a hard drive ..the other still has its original 810mb hd Scuse the photo location as my bed was the only place big enough. OS wise ..The 510 runs Win98se the 4900s win95 and the other 2 win 3.1 rgds VS oh and yes that is one of my cats on guard .. George ...sister Peppa is outside as yet Last edited by ViperSan; 18th Jun 2019 at 5:54 pm. |

Re: Another vintage Laptop
Sadly ..as expected the floppy drive does not function ..so now I will try and find a more recent alternative that will fit.
The good news .. ..and this took me by surprise really ..it has built in scsi support . Mine is the poor relation ..as there was a TFT version made which I suspect cost more when new. ..and that one came with 8mb ram ..wheras mine is only 4mb This is a rather odd proprietory simm (I'll include a photo) and the T2400CT as opposed to my CS version had a larger hard drive .. Re: Another vintage Laptop
Hopefully got lucky ..
No chance of buying a working replacement for the Citizen W1D slimline floppy drive.. No chance of obtaining a replacement belt. So went searching for a mitusmi 353F3 which is a drive I've used before in this situation. It is slimline ..but sadly black a bezel. But found the last one listed on eBay .. offered a fiver including postage ..and it was accepted. Hopefully I will get a result if I can transfer the flex ribbon over easily. sometimes the connectors are upside down or on the wrong side of the drive. Wish me luck. lol Last edited by ViperSan; 18th Jun 2019 at 10:41 pm. |

Re: Another vintage Laptop
The Mitsumi slim floppy arrived this morning.
As expected this is electrically similar so should work ok. The problem in this case is that the misumi is 1mm thicker which isn't a big deal ..but also 1cm longer ...which is. Thus I can to file the the floppy drive opening of the laptop case to allow it to protude a bit at the front. That said it might not have looked so glaringly obvious if it had had a white bezel ..but sadly it is black. Still I'd rather have it working than pretty. pix attached rgds VS Last edited by ViperSan; 21st Jun 2019 at 5:19 pm. |

Re: Another vintage Laptop
When you've got it working and have nothing better to do you could always get some plastic primer and a suitable rattle-can and respray the bezel to match...!

Re: Another vintage Laptop
Yep ..that's a good idea buddy.
Too many irons in the fire atm, so a job for later methinks. Just done a quick lash up reassembly to test the drive. Formatted a 720k and 1.44mb just fine. |
