I would not rush into re-wiring the tone arm, try the new cartridge first. A change of wiring (assuming you can source suitable shielded cable such as in the Collaro) is unlikely to make any audiable difference.

WHOA! I never said rewire the arm. Or replace the cartridge.

I suggested hum pickup on the wiring or cartridge.

If you are going to ask for advice, please read it correctly when given.
The arm wiring i as far as I know screened cable, is it earthed properly at one end?
Are the connections good? Is it the correct cartridge?

Sorry. A bit of misunderstanding here. The original cartridge (a mono one) is so corroded it's not worth buying new styli and I don't want to damage records either. That's why I've opted for the BSR - following advice.

Arm wiring will stay as is and will only be replaced if necessary. I had to remove it with the arm in order to clean and lubricate the deck properly. Deck now works well, now it's back together. I cannot tell state of wiring until I get the new cartridge.

Hope that's clearer!

Thanks for everyone's help. My Ferranti is now working well. I'd forgotten just how good they sound!
