SME3009 advice
A friend has dropped a lid on the arm. It has broken what I believe to be called a stabiliser bar. How is it fixed in, is it a new piece, if so what do I search for.
Many thanks. |

Re: SME3009 advice
That's the bias lever that has snapped off - it's what the loop of the bias weight hooks over to provide anti-skating.
I'm not sure if the remains can be removed or if you can obtain replacements. Your friend might have to purchase a whole new upper bearing housing from someone who can provide parts. |

Re: SME3009 advice
I have just found one on the auction site, it says SME 3009 S2 Improved Pillar & Yoke, I only need the yoke, so I have messaged the seller. I looks the same, but the one here says SME 3009, the one above is S2 Improved, it looks the same, not sure of differences.

Re: SME3009 advice
The rod on the S2 is longer than that on the Improved, as the latter was designed for a maximum playing weight of 1.5g, so needed less bias than its predecessor, which was calbrated up to 5g.

Re: SME3009 advice
Ted, the arm here is a SME 3009, so I assume one of the earliest? If the one I am looking at is longer, it would be OK, tracking at 2g. I met a guy not long ago who knew all the models and differnces, I am still learning. At the moment the broken bits are a a engineers who maybe able to help, but need all my options open.

Re: SME3009 advice
The broken bias rod is from a Series 2 as produced from around 1962 to 1973, virtually unchanged. The Improved had the shorter bias rod and a counterweight on a threaded mounting, and some had a fixed headshell. Yours is a Series 2 on this evidence.

Re: SME3009 advice
Give SME a call - they have lots of NOS spares, and might just have what you need. They are exceptionally helpful.
