OK. When you come back tell us if R15 is the correct value. 220K colour code is red, red, yellow.

Well guys, good news! Philips is sounding. Wow does she sound sweet! A little more questions though. The magical eye is on but I can barely see it. Do I need a new UM80 tube?

Good Morning to all, (9:40 AM Panama eastern time)
I noticed last nite on the shortwave freqs. I could not receive many stations, especially on SW 1, which was nothing at all. It just makes a hum when turn the dial going over stations but no voice signal. On SW 2, I heard maybe 3 stations at the most. They come and go. On MW which is local I could hear about 5 stations. Is this normal or is it the antenna, and where is it located?
Also, the dial lamp bulbs are burnt and I tried getting them localy but had no success. any suggested place I can get them.

Have you checked R15. This is the third time I've asked you.

I thought I answered that already. Anyway,
R 15 measures 219 ohm
R 15 measures 85 V on the side connected to the tube,
and 103 V on the other side when the radio is on.
And it is red, red, yellow, gold

The correct value for R15 is 220 Kilo ohms or 220,000 ohms. They amount to the same thing.

A 220K resistor is colour coded Red, Red, Yellow.

If it measures 219 ohms as you say then either the resitor is faulty, your meter is faulty, you're measuring the wrong resistor or you're misreading the meter. Which is it?

Hello all. I would like to know what else can be done to receive better my SW stations.
SW1 nothing heard. SW2 three stations Radio Nederlands, and two from Spain.
Thanks again.

You should just need an external aerial (antenna). A length of wire probably no more than 3 metres long will be sufficient and you'll probably be able to use less than that. Just plug it into the external aerial socket. It's quite normal for a valve radio to require an external aerial (antenna) for SW. Internal aerials are used for FM and MW/LW.

Thanks, I'll try that tonight. Another thing is the tuning lamp or magical eye. Is it suppose to brighten up when you hit a station because mine dosen't. Infact, it's very dim. And where am I able to get those 8089D light bulbs or is there some other substitute. Thanks once again.

I tried putting a wire attached to a bolt in the antenna output, but to no avail. It does sound stronger but on the SW2 I get a lot of hum scrolling over the stations and can receive three stations. Do I need to re-tune the filters or something. Help.
Thanks.
