Smile Pye VT4 missing veneer on cabinet problem

Hello there,
I bought this Pye VT4 recently at the Radiophile auction and it has a good cabinet except for the top edge where some veneer has come adrift and gone missing (see picture) What is the best methood to repair this damage without having to strip off all of the veneer on the top surface and re-veneer it?

Many thanks,
Christopher Capener

p.s The welsh dragon is not being shown on the telly but the front implosion screen reflects very well even though it was designed to minimise reflections

If you're looking at a proper restoration and can afford it, these people do a pretty good job........ http://www.otterantiques.co.uk/Box-Restoration.htm

Otherwise, if you're wishing to do it yourself and have no proper skills in this field you've a major problem to effect an invisible repair. Shame the broken piece of veneer is missing; to find another piece that's an identical match and then to blend it in would be a patience-stretching job.

Getting a good match using some repair pieces is going to be very difficult.

I suspect it'd be easier to remove the entire veneer from the top and replace with a complete new piece. A little mismatch between the new and old would be hardly noticable since the old and new pieces would be at completely different angles so pick up light differently anyway.

Jon

Er, Might be worth a word with Tim (from Bradford on Avon) - another forum member.

I had a few old sets from him, and there was a VT4 cabinet in the same place - it might still be available, and from memory it wasnt in bad condition.......

Cheers
Sean

If you really want to do it yourself:
Strip the entire cabinet of its finish. Obtain some iron-on veneer (check internet for suppliers) of a similar colour and grain. Cut a thin strip using a new craft knife blade, along a dead straight edge. Remove the ragged edge of veneer on the cabinet down to a straight edge. Check for butt-fit of the new strip against the edges. Allow an overhang on the cabinet side of a few millimetres, for cleaning off. Iron the veneer into place. Cut or sand the overhang back to level with the side. Sand dead smooth, use a suitable colour of grain filler as required.* Obtain some toner spray* of an appropriate tone, for example Mahogany. Refinish the cabinet with numerous coats of toner, finishing with clear gloss spray.
The toner will gradually cover the grain and any variations in tone that exist between the new and the old, at the expense of the loss of the grain figure - but that isn't likely to be a problem with the already darkened tone of your set.
Don't overdo the toner in one area and do not sand excessively between coats - if at all - or you run the risk of cutting through the toner and exposing the lighter wood beneath, at which point you strip the whole thing again and start from scratch!

*Grain filler and toner spray products are available in the UK from
