A black one came up for auction a year or two back but someone wanted it more than me. I dropped out at £8.00+p/p. I don't remember what the winning bit was. Brown is one that I read about somewhere but I have never seen one. I foresee another afternoon searching the internet again. Al

Thankyou, Bill.
Haven't got Skype, but I'm a bit wiser now! Apologies, too, for going off-topic slightly 😳

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
I've just found the two types of Electrak plugs I mentioned earlier
The pins look identical, it's the position of the plastic lugs that makes them fit their respective sockets. I would guess that if you filed off the lug it would fit any socket. For those who haven't seen these before, you insert the plug into the socket (which looks like a key escutcheon) with the cable entry to the right then rotate the plug 90deg clockwise. As I said earlier, there was at least a suggestion that these should be used in domestic installations when they appeared in the mid '80s. They do have a lot to commend them, but I suppose BS1363 was too established. What do you think?

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
Hi,
I've got a couple of those too. I red twin gang 'EPOS' (Electronic Point Of Sale) socket and a couple of plugs to suit. Also, a white one that doesn't fit due to the different 'keying'. Cheers, Pete.

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
As mentioned elsewhere one classic brand (type) that arguably needs discarding when it comes of age, is Duraplug (rubber). Terminal decline can sometimes be detected by distortion of the actual body of the plug, but long before this enough sulphur will have leached out to turn the silver plated parts black and the brass parts brown. It can be polished out of course but it's not a good sign.

In "Four Candles", R Barker wanted one for his bathroom of all places.

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
I remember getting one from the Stockport branch of Comet with my Grundig ghetto blaster style radio / tape recorder in 1987. I've got the feeling my parents binned it a few years ago in a clearout.

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
Interesting subject, being a Bakelite collector I've amassed quite a few old plugs and adapters over the years, many of the earlier types with round pins. these wont ever be used but too nice and well made to discard.
I like to put brown Bakelite plugs on my radios, they look more fitting that a white one so if i see any of these at the local car boot I'll snap them up. A few from "the Box" the wooden plug must be quite rare. I have a rubber "Hoover" plug......... somewhere!!!!

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
The wooden plug would probably have been made some time after 1910. Similar plugs are shown in the GEC catalogue for October 1911 and are said to be Home Office Pattern. The hand shield is for protecting the hand of the user "even if the plug is inserted on a dead short", and the side flex entry is to make it not possible to withdraw the plug by pulling the flex. GEC's version was said to be in accordance with recommendations in the Annual report of the Electrical Inspector of Factories . G. Scott Ram Esq for 1909.
I did try tracking down this report a decade or so ago but drew a blank. |

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
That plug looks positively pristine and beautifully shiny!
Has it ever been used?

Re: Any other plug collectors out there?
Yes it was used, I have 2 of these, the other is on some test equipment. I did give them a good clean when I got them. But as I mentioned above I don't think these are all that old.
