Slogans and strap lines - FUN QUIZ
I've been having a thumb through some old electronics mags and related materials.
It struck me how many manufacturers and advertisers used 'slogans' and 'strap lines' to sell their wares back in the day. (Some of them with the odd pipe smoking gent !) Here's a dozen of them, with some bits missing. All you have to do is try and fill in all the blanks....... 1) “Fine sets these ______________” 2) “When is an Avo meter not an Avometer ? when it tests ____________ , ______________ & ______________” 3) “High Fidelity Systems for a thrilling new experience in good listening” __________(makers name) 4) ‘The recorder you will eventually own” __________(makers name) 5) ‘For the closest approach to the original sound’ ___________(correct makers name !) 6) Who asked “Shall we toss it to the totters?” when having a sale ______________ 7) “____________ doing things in styli” 8) ‘No engineer can resist a resistor by ____________” 9) “The Heart of a good set , ______________Valves ” 10) “I knew you’d get a _______________ in the end” 11) “_____________ The tape recorders made for enthusiasts - by enthusiasts” 12) “It’s the __________ touch that tells” Andy |

Re: Slogans and strap lines - FUN QUIZ
I think I remember a few of them :
1) Fergusons 2) I am pretty sure it mentioned 'Compactrons' and possibly 'Nuvistors'. It was the VCM163 5) Acoustical Manufacturing Company? (Quad amplifiers) 9) Mullard? |

Re: Slogans and strap lines - FUN QUIZ
For "one bright shining moment" in the late 1950s/early '60s, Ekco, in conjunction with AEI, sold TVs & Radios in Australia.
They were very much "Oz style", but far from being just "badge-engineered" versions of other brands, they were unique designs in their own right. I remember the jingle they used on radio ads: - "World renowned in sight & sound---Ekco, Ekco, Ekco!" |

Thanks to everyone who's participated in this.
Special congrats to Lawrence, who has nailed some of the more obscure ones ! The complete list is as follows: 1) “Fine sets these FERGUSONS” 2) “When is an Avo meter not an Avometer ? when it tests NUVISTORS , COMPACTRONS & 13 PIN VALVES ” ( ad for AVO VCM 163 ) 3) “High Fidelity Systems for a thrilling new experience in good listening” PYE 4) ‘The recorder you will eventually own” REVOX 5) ‘For the closest approach to the original sound’ ACOUSTICAL MFG. CO. 6) Who asked “Shall we toss it to the totters?” when having a sale HOME RADIO, MITCHAM 7) ACOS - doing things in stylii” 8) ‘No engineer can resist a resistor by DUBILIER 9) “The Heart of a good set , MARCONI Valves ” 10) “I knew you’d get a FERROGRAPH in the end” 11) “BRENELL The tape recorders made for enthusiasts - by enthusiasts” 12) “It’s the ALBA touch that tells” Well done also to Tony Duell who sussed out that no.2 referred to the AVO VCM63 12 was perhaps the hardest, with no correct answers Andy |
