2Bdecided, yes you are quite correct in your assumption that the picure will tend to hold over an entire field, this is due to the xtal having a very high Q and by definition behaves rather slugishly and tends to ignore the periods of non chroma , that is it does not wander far off frequency. It is of course possible to fix the colour uncertainty by suitably synthesised reference signals derived from V and H sync however multiplying up from H rate to Fsc and maintaining phase coherence was fraught with problems back in the early 70s, at least for me it was. I think I addressed ppppenguin's remarks on the 9th and 10th of March this year, albeit a little tongue in cheek.
