It is a relay base. I widened the holes to accept Mazda octal pins. The springs in the base didn't seem to mind!

Yes, fuses - the longer (30mm?) ones.

And yes, there is a smaller reaction coil turning inside the larger one. I used 6mm aluminium tube with 4mm threaded stud up the middle for the control shaft.

'Capacitors' are redundant end caps from extruded cases.

Tuning capacitor purchased at NVCF for £1.

The knobs were from Farnell, IIRC.
