Re: Ferguson 14" portable TV set model 454T
Time to do up the cabinet. There is the damage at the bottom edge of the CRT aperture to deal with and also some damage to one of the removable grills fitted on sides of the cabinet.
The one that carries the louspeaker is OK but the other has a piece of the corner broken off. I'll use Araldite do do the repair but first a wire support frame must be made to give the repair some strength. Without it it would most likely just break off. DFWB. |

Re: Ferguson 14" portable TV set model 454T
The repaired side grill shown alongside the other one which has the loudspeaker. I'm not too sure about the choice of gold paint. Perhaps a bit bright compared with the original finish.
The set is going to be completely resprayed anyway. DFWB. |

Much nicer colour than the original. "Your" colour is more of the period anyway...

Re: Ferguson 14" portable TV set model 454T
I seem to recall that my set even in the early 70s that the grilles were slightly darker than the main cabinet. It was a slightly dusky gold colour. Of course it was 13 or so years old by this stage, easily long enough for paint or plastics to change colour, especially given that parts of the cabinet ran quite warm.
My set expired about 1977, and I scrapped it - I know if I could turn back time! ( it had already been superseded a couple of years earlier by a Panasonic military style Tr505G) This thread has inspired me to dig out my set and put it on the bench to finish the restoration! Hi Andy,
I scrapped my first 454T in 1963 and thanks to a member of this forum I have one again. DFWB. |

Great colour David! The colour is nice and easy to apply with an aerosol too.
I think you should make a family of it and spray up a nice Hacker Herald and a DAC90, maybe even a TV22. We must have a go with a few spray cans on your next visit. I've just discovered a box of dusty transistor receivers lurking in the loft. Tremendous fun! John. |

Re: Ferguson 14" portable TV set model 454T
The Murphy portable TVs that come to mind are the 1955 model V230 and the 1958 V350. I've no servicing experience of the latter but I'd rather have the Ferguson 454T than the Murphy V230.
As for the Ferguson I scrapped in 1963. It certainly shouldn't been scrapped so soon after only five years. Actually, I got told off by my Mother for chopping up the set. That's the reason why I recently acquired another 454T to redeem myself. DFWB. |

Re: Ferguson 14" portable TV set model 454T
We've all done it, my own biggest regret was scrapping a GEC 2017 in 1981, the version with FM radio. I've never seen one since and probably never will again.....
Back to the Ferguson, I found it seems virtually impossible finding identical shade colour to the original as I found with silver on the 16" HMV 960 portable. Having said that the antique gold does look good, should look even better when the whole set is sprayed that colour, certainly better than the faded "pinkish" effect it was. It's a cracking set with a superb picture, I noticed the PY33 looks to be the original one. A first class restoration job. Cheers, Brian |

A lot of auto factors can mix up paint into aerosols to match a sample. Worth considering

I've been thinking about that.
