Kia ora Dave,

It has always i.e. previously been my opinion that plugs and sockets must prove superior to a sector switch. Recent comments have stirred up my thoughts.

This is certainly an interesting site.

Trevor, from way down under.

Yep Trevor, you can certainly tell the wander plug instruments that haven't been kept in their box while out of use; i have a meter that has been boxed most of it's life and the terminals are as bright as granny's candlesticks!

I reckon survival of wander plug instruments has benefited from the good old 'lack of moving parts' phenomena. There is an additional glitch with the early avominor in that the terminals aren't always smooth and parallel along their length (possibly due to the peening) so nothing short of a miniature brass bottle brush or a pipe cleaner coated in abrasive polish is going to clean properly.

One thing i have noticed is brass suffering from zinc migration can't be relied upon for good conductivity- even if it's polished to pretty pink.

Firstly, who is the current custodian of the master list? Peter (PMM) is that you?

Secondly, here finally is a fairly complete list of my Avos with serial numbers.
(some duplicates and spare items have recently been passed on to Sinewave.)

Original, 144187
Model 2, 1730 & 2080
Model 2A, 4448
Model 3, 13-1012
Model 4, 83-1909
Model 5 (s/n sadly painted over by previous owner during restoration!)
(Model 6 - still looking for one!)
7 Mk1, 19378-A-1150 (marked B.O.A.C. on faceplate!)
7 Mk2, 3526-A-762F
8 Mk1, 153771 & 13268-C-453
8 Mk2, 94068-C-759
8 Mk6, 0006899GE (9/84) - my workbench Avo
8 Mk7, 1043 M124139 000501 (long number!)
DC Avominor, 17811-74
Universal Avominor, 109440-650 & 40399-241
Heavy Duty, 9817-474

Plus some later digital and export ones that will be catalogued at a later date.

I am still keeping an eye out for early (pre Avo 7) avometers. So do PM me if you have anything of that ilk.

It occurs to me that this list (no names, just models and serials) forms a very valuable resource for tracing Avos that have been stolen or mislaid.

It is wise of you to mention which ones you are seeking, as even if you don't get a bite on here, they sometimes pop up on ebay shortly after you have expressed an interest. Sometimes it's coincidence, and sometimes not! A model 6 doesn't appeal to me personally so if one appeared i would let you know.

Pamphonica,

Thank you for the information. Yours is a very significant collection of select early models with supplementary "modern" meters.

This survey arose out of discussions between me and the late SPCH and he intended to collate the information gathered. I have been trying to respond to questions which have arisen to keep up interest and to keep the survey alive but time to carry out the collation it deserves has not, so far, been available to me.

I think it is fair to say that there is a great deal of useful information within this survey and it is now large enough to be worth drawing together in database form to allow some assessment of the numbers of various models of instrument to be estimated. I would also hope that collectors would continue to contribute information through the courtesy of the forum. It is one of the longest threads on the forum, judging by the number of pages which have accumulated.

I feel that it would be incumbent on anyone making the collation to make the results available on the Forum or otherwise through the BVWS since so many people have contributed.

I don't expect to have the time to analyse all this information for some considerable time but if anyone is willing to do the work and has sufficient experience of database construction to do it reasonably quickly, I would be very pleased if they would take it on.

Your comment on the list as an aid to tracing stolen meters is interesting. In the late 1930s, some demonstration Avometers were stolen from a sales rep's. car and a list of serial numbers was published in the trade press. I'm unable to say if the instruments were recovered, but it's sad to think anyone who could appreciate the qualities of Avometers would be dishonest enough to buy a stolen one.

My HR Avominor was sufficiently coveted by a previous owner (H.Ball) for him to micro-engrave his name 3 times on the instrument, and also on the brass catch & hinge on the box. It was so small and well done that i cannot really class it as damage/defacing, just a bit of provenance.

I think Peter (PMM) is spot on. This data is very useful, not only to us, but to future curators. Many rare items (Bugattis, Pre-war TVs etc) have a register of their serial numbers.
I think we could start an online database of Avometers using Google Forms. Anyone could enter their own data (sorry, I really can't re-key 77 pages of forum inputs!) and the resultant data would be available in spreadsheet form to anyone, again, online.
I've had a play and it looks feasible, with minimal intervention from me once it's kicked off. We can appoint "collaborators" from the outset so a small group could monitor progess, access data and change input forms where required. No single point of failure!
Anyone have any thoughts?

Deathly hush re a possible database of members' Avo offerings!
But I've kicked it off and it's here if you want to contribute.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...7YQKg/viewform
You can submit serial numbers anonymously if you wish.
I will publish a link to an online summary spreadsheet once I have a few contributions.

Thanks Jeremy for starting the ball rolling. I'll go through my Avo collection and submit the details once the Xmas rush is over and the grandchildren have been returned to their rightful owners in the New Year!

Not sure if this works, but here are some other links.
This one should give you a summary of previous entries
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F.../viewanalytics
And this one may give you a summary spreadsheet
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=905286088
Let's see what works!

Some of my model 7’s are on there, but there’s no pull-down for my favorite AVO, the EA113, so I haven’t entered my three!

I've now added quite a few more models, so I can list my two EA113s etc!
Only 5 entries other than my 20 so far - hopefully a few more folk will put theirs up.
We've had hundreds listed in this thread.
