Default BSR Turntable. Cartridge to Amplifier wiring.

Hi

I don’t suppose Anyone can help. I’ve just picked up a lovely FIDELITY RG34 Radiogram. And I’ve opened it up and the wiring from the BSR Deck to the amp appears to be rather strange. I have attached a photo. Please can someone confirm if this is correct.

The cable appears to be shielded with the shielding for each channel meeting bridging two of the tonearm cables. I had expected two cables both with separate + and - wires

Hello and welcome. That's OK - it's common for stereo cartridges to have 2 +ve and 2 -ve connections - but the negatives are common grounds so they will come together somewhere.

I see. Thank you that's really helpful. It just looked rather sloppy. I guess they were mass produced units.

Thanks

I'm not sure if it is just the camera angle but there appears to be a white wire running behind the tag strip from the tag with the green wire. The other end of this wire looks like it should connect to the tag with the black wire but it appears to have come adrift. If it has then you'll probably just have a buzz from one channel.

If you are looking at what I see, I think it is a wire link connecting the tag with the green wire to the middle earthed tag, but see what you mean.

I would agree, it looks like a wire link.

This is a view of my Bush record player. The colour coding of the pick up leads is slightly different but i think the connections to the tag strip are fairly typical of this type of player.

It doesn't look like original wiring - possibly a replacement TT?

The wire link behind the screw appears to have been snipped at both ends. As someone else has already said there will probably be a buzz when touching the metal unit.

Possibly in the second photo but not in the first. In the second photo the middle earthed tag is linked at the front to the black wire/screen connection, so would not expect it to buzz when touched.

The wire link between the middle terminal with the screw is soldered to the terminal with the green wire but is not connected to the terminal with the black wire. However the terminal with the black wire and the middle terminal with the screw are connected at the bottom with a bit of a messy solder joint with the stranded wire from both of the cables. There is no audible buzz or anything that would signify there is anything wrong. I was just interested to open it up and see a bit of a mess of solder.

Thanks for the advice though

Every photo of this tag strip seems to be different. I'd guess that BSR just wired the four pickup wires and left the rest to the integrators. Some are neater than others, and that's before it gets "modified" in service!
