Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
Could be Chris, but it has audio equipment and is attached to a mobile phone...a very old one, probably late 80's

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
Well Advanced Perimeter Systems is still in business, and specialises in security. I would guess that the phone calls 'control' and sends a pre-recorded message when a threat is detected.
Is a sensor of some sort evident? Edit: The 'Open' and 'Short' cable alerts must be a clue - looks like their Flexiguard system, or a precursor. Last edited by dseymo1; 31st May 2016 at 6:56 pm. |

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
Hi Desymo
Nope, the whole unit is contained in a heavy duty travel case... looks to be a portable unit...if it's of any help, It has crows feet on the outside of the travel case Charlie |

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
Given it's in NI, could it be some sort of Army Intelligence bugging system from the Troubles? It looks a bit Heath Robinson for that though.

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
Hi
It says 'Moblie Detection Unit' - could that mean moblie phone rather than portable? Might it be for detecting analogue mobile phone transmissions and recording them? |

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
The digital voice recorder holds a spoken message. The other box is some kind of intrusion detector and when triggered uses the mobile phone to send the message to the preset number. The whole thing is packed in a suitcase so it can be taken to some venue to be protected and set-up.
Just guessing David

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
Looks a lot like a very early autodialler.
Record a message, and in the event of the protected circuit being broken it calls a preset number and plays the message to the intended recipient.

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
The intended recipient would probably be your pussy cat. The idea was to set it up near the cat basket and send soothing messages to your furry friend while you sip nasty coloured drinks on some far away beach. Of course I could be wrong..John.

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
Could it be a temporary system, for short-term use in a building while the existing burglar alarm system is out of commission for maintenance, upgrade or repair?
It definitely looks like some kind of security thing, and the voice recorder and phone fit with that idea. Maybe the idea was that a high-end alarm company loaned you one of these devices to keep your premises protected while they were installing one of their permanent systems?

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
The crows feet on the outside of the case are a strong suggestion that it's something the military used as a portable intruder alarm. Perhaps they searched a hotel conference room looking for things that shouldn't be there, then used this to make sure no-one came along later to add anything without them knowing.

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
I have come across a portable system, though much later (early noughties). It was used to protect a parked up truck with a prototype car in it from nosey parkers. So there have probably been uses for that kind of thing for ever.

Re: Help Identifying this box of gear
I have seen them units before, Julie_m is right on the nail, it's a portable intruder detector/alarm.
