Even more technically, if you want to write µ it's Alt + 0181 on Windows! I can thank this forum for telling me that.

If it's not the motor, it could be one of the components you mentioned on the armature. Check those capacitors for leakage at the rated voltage.

Assuming you're using a PC you need to use the numeric keypad, not the keys along the top of the keyboard.

Pi is supposed to be Alt 227 but no good for me.

Ah, sorry! I forgot to mention the numpad bit. I was reading up on this the other day when I wanted to write 'pi' when Lawrence was explaining screen grid losses. I had the same experience as you, David: it doesn't work, and the character map has no Alt code for pi for whatever reason (UK keyboard, Windows 10...)

However, a post on the Windows board revealed that Alt codes are not considered part of modern Unicode setups, with hex codes being preferred. In my character map, a small pi is U+03C0. We need to make sure all Unicode characters are allowed, so we have to add a string to the 'input method' in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Input Method.

Under Input Method we create a new string with the name EnableHexNumpad; double-click on it in the right-hand pane and change its value to '1'. After a restart, I can use the left Alt as the 'U' in U+03C0 and type π.

Caveats: the '+' is required as a keypress, unlike in the Alt code where it represents holding down the Alt key while typing the numbers, although holding down the Alt for the duration of entering the code is required. The initial zero is not required though. Thus holding down Alt and typing +03c0 or +3c0 results in the same output of pi. One can use this for any Hexcode entry in the character map (obtainable swiftly in Windows 10 by pressing the Windows key and starting to type 'character map'. For me it pops up as soon as I type 'C', perhaps because I've done it a few times!)

Anyway, after that swoop through the registry I'll stop before the Motorola is entirely lost in the dust.

I tried again in the reply box on this forum to be sure ....as soon as I press 7 the screen goes to Google search but if I carry on and complete the number sequence then let go of Alt then the resulting symbol eg: the one for squared or cubed, is displayed in the Google search box

Thanks for the tips on u....I’m on my iPad now so no idea how to get a proper u symbol up. Anyone?

If using the numeric keypad on a modern keyboard, try hitting NumLock first.

Also: Some programs, Alt-919 gives Ω, sometimes Alt-937.

For μ it's alt-931 or alt-956

For π, alt-935 or alt-960.

Still can't get it to work, keeps going to Google or another page on UKVRR as soon as I press 7 or 9 respectively on the number keypad

Only way is when it goes to Google and displays the result of entering Alt+0178 into the Googles search box is to cut and paste it from there

Got a feeling that Google and Windows 10 have a problem at the moment.

Αdd the Greek keyboard. Settings/General/Keyboards/Add New Keyboard select the Greek one. Choose which keyboard to use with the Globe sign on the bottom left of the keyboard.

I normally that's what I have done and hope that folks that read my posts understand, but I would like to use the proper symbols without scrolling through reams of symbols in a character map or having to do a semester on how to use a computer.
