Oil filled capacitor
I have an old amplifier from 40'S, which capacitor replaces this broken oil capacitor: HELVAR 4uf 1000v?

Re: Oil filled capacitor
Hi Cardiff
Something like this would probably do the job http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4uF-1000V-...-/141806934717 Cheers Mike T

Re: Oil filled capacitor
Is it possible to replace it with electrolyte capacitor?

Re: Oil filled capacitor
As an aside, please don't open the faulty capacitor - I believe the oil is classed as a toxic substance these days.

Re: Oil filled capacitor
It isn't a general thing that oil containing PCB was used, just some types.

Re: Oil filled capacitor
I don't think you will find an electrolytic capacitor rated for 1000V. You could use two 8uF 500V-rated electrolytics connected in series, but you must use balancing resistors to ensure that the capacitors share the voltage equally. You must also ensure that the ripple current rating on the capacitors is not exceeded. And electrolytic capacitors are polarised, so if the voltage across the capacitor ever changes polarity then you can't safely use electrolytics.
Something like this should work electrically for most applications http://uk.farnell.com/epcos/b32776t0...ial/dp/2677859. But it will be a very different shape and size from your oil-filled one and the connections will be different. It seems your circuit may be operating at very high voltage. If you are not sure which capacitor to use then perhaps you do not have much experience with high-voltage equipment ? If you are in any doubt about high-voltage safety then please make sure that your work is adequately supervised. Cheers, GJ

If the price is putting you off there are many cheaper capacitors mostly Russian military. Just do a search on Ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-MBGP-1-...QAAOSwGIRXX~wE depends what your trying to achieve, authentic, working, pretty And in case you wondered PCB's are polychlorinated biphenyls very nasty Cheers Mike T

Re: Oil filled capacitor
Two of these might do - https://www.watfordvalves.com/produc...il.asp?id=3530 . I have some oil filled 4u 600v, what is the HT on your amp, is actually near 1kv or is that just the part used?
Andy.

Re: Oil filled capacitor
Thank you, but the amp was only a project, and it's too hard for me, I took it for recycling.
