Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
You have now...
Incidentally, whereas 13A are always brown and 3A red, I have 1A, 2A, 5A, 7A and 10A which are black. I also have a blue 2A and yellow 10As.

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
Heres a pic of the British Tucker plug.Interestingly it has a slot with a hole leading to the earth pin area and another leading to the live. Why i wonder ? These are underneath the base plate .It also has the normal hole in the body near the earth pin

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
This is a 'Sector' plug from around 1962, my parents bought a load of them when they had their first house.
As a child I remember most of them failed because when you unplugged them, the top would rip off in your hand leaving the body and pins in the socket. The brass insert in the top is quite shallow and the top itself is very thin, a damaged one leaves a small hole. I have preserved this one for my vintage christmas lights and am aware of the danger.

I wondered if it might have been to allow earthing of a radio without leading a separate earth-wire out of the cable-clamped aperture (so not compromising the integrity of the cable-clamp)? I may have one of these plugs kicking about somewhere and will provide a pic if I find it (if no-one else does).

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
Yes! Lucien, I've got a stackable version of the Clix plug. Almost identical to the plain version from the "pin side" and a socket instead of the camel hump back.

Hi, Here are a few pictures of the Dorman and Smith "King Pin", I have an advert for one of these in a old trader magazine somewhere and may post that if I can find it. Regards Andrew P.S. I have just noticed that the fuse in this plug is rated at 2 Amps and coloured Blue! Last edited by AndiiT; 14th Aug 2010 at 7:35 pm. Reason: Note re fuse added |

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
They were certainly around in 1955, as this advert shows (it's the cooker unit that was new, not the plug). I remember ours from the 1960s, but not sure when production stopped.
Most likely made at the DS factory at Workington!

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
Hi,
Thought you'd be interested in this Duraplug 13amp fused connector I'd forgotten I had. I had a 5amp round pin version too and I think they made a 15amp one as well, but I've never seen one of those. It's marked "W. W. Haffenden Ltd, Sandwich, Kent." Cheers de Pete

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
Those are splashproof 13A connectors and are still made

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
Coo, I didn't realise they were still made. All three sizes? Haven't seen one for many years. When we started caravanning I wired it for mains and used one of these for the power inlet.
Cheers de Pete

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
They probably still make round pin ones too ,as they used unfused sockets in theatre lighting etc.

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
Found something interesting the other day at a boot sale. A 3-1(or rather 1-3) bayonet adaptor, for running 3 bulbs from one light socket. Black ridged Bakelite, although not that old and alas unbranded.
Unfortunately I was not in a posiition to buy it, or take pics. 3 bayonet sockets in line like a duck's foot. That DS "Kingpin" IS interesting. Shame they never caught on. A good place for finding old plugs is boot sales. There is often a box full worth a rummage.

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
Hi,
I remember having a three way bayonet lamp adapter as a kid (other kids asked their parent's for toys; I asked for plugs ) It came from Woolies and I think it was made by W&G, (Ward and Goldstone, Trafford Park, Manchester. If I remember correctly). Yes, Duraplug rubber 15amp plugs, trailing sockets & adapters are very common in the theatrical world. I thought the one in my OP was obsolete, apparently not. Cheers de Pete

Re: Unusual BS1363 Socket Designs
That sounds familiar My parents used to lift me up so I could see over the counter at Woolworths to choose electrical fittings. Wouldn't be surprised if my 3 way BC adaptor came from Woolies.
