Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
Hi Jay,
I read Duke_Nukems comment too, sounds worrying. He mentions Spencer West on his site looks like they were based in Gt Yarmouth, he lists a lot of models maybe yours is one of those. Not much data online but maybe he has some info lurking that he just can't bring himself to scan. http://www.thevalvepage.com/tvmanu/s...pencerwest.htm Look forward to you documenting this one! Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
You cannot compare a Spencer west to a lada, The Lada is a Rolls Royce in comparison.
Good luck if you attempt it!

Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
There were lots of makes like this who came and went. Some are quite rare now, such as Spencer West.
Don't let other people's tales get to you so much. Clean it up and do the PSU and Line/EHT stages. It's only a TV after all. Cheers, Steve P.

Spencer West deservedly have a rubbish reputation for their attempt at a portable, but maybe you'll be lucky and find their more normal products have a Plessey in the back. Either way worth saving. Oh, and if anyone does have a portable Spencer West knocking about that they are fed up with ... TTFN, Jon |

Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
What can I say, I've already got a HMV 1807 in the to do pile with veneer falling off and an OC crt heater, so it looks like this Spencer west will fit right in hear. once I've picked it up I'll do the basics and give it some volts and see what happens.
wish me luck. Jay

Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
Hi Jay,
You've got to see one though. The truth is Spencer-West sets did have a bad reputation for reliability, but how much of this was due to bad or indifferent servicing procedures in the late 50s and 60s? There was some pretty awful service engineers around in those days. (I bet I've started something now) Information for models with 70 degree CRTs can be found in the 1958/9 Newnes TV and Radio servicing books. Models covered are the 17, 171 and 172. These models employ a Brimar C17LM CRT which is an electrostatic focus CRT. Start with changing all the waxies and take it from there. Circuit refinement: The video amplifier features a cathode follower to drive the CRT cathode and sync separator. Nevertheless, Trevor has a point. If this TV was a car, it certainly would not be a Lada. The Lada is too upmarket for comparisons. DFWB. |

I remember it was a very strange beast, the speaker was mounted at the end of the tube??!! Never got more than a plume of smoke out of it I saw your set on that well known web site... I thought at the time that WOULD be a challenge! But seriously, i am looking forward to this restoration, hmv1807? easy! Mark |

Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
It will be an easy one. These were not TOO bad to be honest. Quite straightforward. I think the LOPT will be ok and the Brimar tubes usually hold up.
The 9" portable was simply the worst T.V. I have ever encountered with bits stuck on everywhere. It looks very much like a bread board construction and I have never seen a picture on one. A completely tangled mess. They didn't even bother to drill the circuit board simply 'gobbing on' the components on long leads. I think your set is of conventional construction and the usual waxies should bring forth some sort of raster.....Good luck with it. Regards, John. |

The attachments are of the circuit diagrams of models 17,171 and 172.
Note the reflexed sound IF amplifier and the triode audio output stage. I can't imagine that there will be much audio power from this arrangement. DFWB. |

Any chance of a couple of pics of the chassis?

Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
Hello Jay.
So it was you who outbid me! Well done. Looking forward to seeing some pictures of the internal construction, and of course - a picture on the CRT. These are quite rare beasts now it seems, I would rather have an oddball to sort out rather than a TV22. So good luck . Cheers. SimonT.

HMV/MARCONI....Actually the PCF80 gives quite a good account of itself as a sound output valve. J.

Re: Anyone recognise this Spencer West TV set
Hi Sideband,
After checking out the characteristics of the ECC82/12AT7 it turns out that the valve could well be up to the task of being an audio output valve. ECC82: Pa Max 2.275W. Gm 2.2mA/V @ Va 250V. mu is only 17. Hence the need for two audio amplifier stages. Also the ra is 7.7Kohm. The ra of an ECL80 is 150Kohm. The ECC82 and it's predecessors such as the 6SN7 and ECC35 were often used as a frame output valve. The EF80 was used as an audio output valve in the last EMI TV set. The 1956/7 HMV 1854 was a receiver that used a PCB. Look out for that one. HKshort and thermionic are right, look out for those quirky sets like Spencer-West and Masteradio. There are others such as Portadyne, made by Dynaport Radio & Television. All are great fun and can picked up very cheaply. DFWB. |

Here's an advertisment for the Spencer-West TV.
It's built to Spencer-West standards so it must be good. DFWB. |
