Sony KV1320UB - which version?
Hi,
I've recently acquired the above TV and wonder if anybody out there can tell me which version of the set I have? I understand that there was a later version with a revised layout? Hope the photo's help. Many Thanks, Adrian.

Re: Sony KV1320UB - which version?
This is the earlier version with the valved EHT rectifier and a "mains transformer". There were even two versions of this - one where the tube heaters were kept powered when the main chassis was off (for a sort of "instant on" feature), this was latterly deleleted. Later versions of the series of sets had the brightness and vertical hold controls on the top at the back as opposed to the side...

Re: Sony KV1320UB - which version?
Yours looks like the MK1, as it has the valve for the EHT rectifier present, the MK2 used solid state rectifiers here, there are of course many other differences.
The MK1 went up to ser. no. 100,000, the MK2 from 100,001. I am not sure if they were "officially" known as MK1 and 2, Studio 263 is your Sony man here, he will know for sure.

The SCC-15A-A number on the label, is indicative of the chassis version. Presumably they started counting at 1 for the very first colour chassis and I have never seen a number below 22, so yours seems pretty early, which is confirmed by the valve rectifier.

Re: Sony KV1320UB - which version?
Thanks everyone for the replies so far.
I was thinking it may be the earlier version with the set having the valve E.H.T. rectifier. Many thanks for confirming this. Roughly, what would be the manufacture date of this model? Around 1972? I have now found one or two other posts on this forum regarding this and the MK2 model - it would appear that these sets were generally reliable. I actually quite like the odd 'non-PAL' colour decoder on this set. The picture is actually not that bad, considering its age!

Re: Sony KV1320UB - which version?
Its a later version of the original model (KV-1320UB).
The clues that its not an early one are the number of wires leading from the chassis to the mains transformer (lots), this was a modification to stop the mains transformer primary winding and the tube heater being energised all the time (possibly related to BEAB approval). Really early examples of this chassis have a fuse connected to the tags of the line output unit (balck box on the left hand side), it is covered in clear sleeving and just suspended in the wiring. This was soon removed; it didn't really do anything except fail for no reason, spoiling the reliability of what was otherwise the most reliable colour set on the market. The KV-1320UB Mk II is essentially the same as the later KV-1330UB, apart from not having the horrible green "wood" trim panels behind the controls. |

In my experience it's unusual to find one with a decent tube in it.
