Old laser vision player, any precautions or checks?
Hi,
My parents have an old Laservision disk player, last used about 15 - 20 years ago. Any precautions suggested before powering it up? Thanks |

other than the usual being carefull of the Mains, and as with Any laser system don`t look into the lens with it powered up, many of these devices emit large amount of IR radiation not visible to the eye, but very damaging and painless.

Hi
As YT says be carefull of the laser, it should not be lit though as there are interlocks on the lid assy but these machines use a powerful laser much higher than in your CD player. They are bright red to the eye but can cause severe damage in microseconds. The picture quality is very good indeed with some of the best PAL or NTSC pictures you will get on domestic machines. Just plug it in and see what it does, should be ok though. Trevor

Re: Old laser vision player, any precautions or checks?
Most equipment of this era should be okay if plugged in, there's not quite the same level of caution needed as with a TV that's been sitting in a loft for 40 years.
Do some sensible cold checks - i.e make sure there's not a dead short from live to neutral on the plug and such, but then power it up with your hand on the switch, ready to kill the mains at the first sign of distress. I seem to recall that some of the laserdisc players actually have proper gas (He-Ne?) lasers in them, don't they? These may have suffered somewhat with sitting for so long, not sure whether sitting may have had a detrimental effect on these. They are quite complicated machines though, so be prepared for some detective work if things don't work as expected. Would love to have a proper look at one though. Bit of technology I've never actually encountered yet in person. |

IF it has a He-Ne laser in there, then you have to be Very careful as these trigger at about 2Kv, so watch your fingers!
