Re: 13A Plugs old and not so old
This thread has got me thinking, and I have taken it upon myself to upload some good clear photos of W&G plugs. They're probably just as common as MK plugs on older appliances, I wouldn't be surprised if most households have at least one attached to something, and yet I have noticed there are basically no photos etc on the internet!

Re: 13A Plugs old and not so old
Those are the ones with the funny live pin with a split in it, so that it can grip the fuse directly, aren't they?
The same, Nylon pattern was available until fairly recently, and maybe still is. I used to have one with an oblong red neon built into the top, very handy for soldering irons etc. Nick. |

Re: 13A Plugs old and not so old
Yes that's right. The Nylon lidded one was still in production when branded as Volex, and a lot of the Volex versions of these had shielded pins. And yes, they had split live pins. Wonder if that ever generated any heat build up?
The fully hard plastic/bakelite one has thin metal clips for the fuse to sit in. And yes, I have one of the W&G ones with a red neon on my old antex soldering iron! |

Re: 13A Plugs old and not so old
I've got some old W&G plugs here, and I liked the fact that they were available in various colours. has anyone got the full set?
My dad had an extension reel which had a black & red W&G type plug but it was marked Volex. Cheers, Pete

Re: 13A Plugs old and not so old
It's amazing how a picture can jog one's memory. I had a grey one on an old fridge, and the red/black Nylon sort on a recent extension reel, but the mustard and turquoise-colour ones are a new to me.

Re: 13A Plugs old and not so old
The red/black nylon ones seem fairly popular. I have a fully red nylon Volex one, which is exactly the same shape as the W&G ones - my mate has the exact same red one branded W&G. I also had the old Bakelite red one at one point like the green/grey one shown by Pete.
I'm off to photo my drill now.... |

More old plugs!
Hi,
Whilst sorting through my box of plugs to root out some 'Grelcos', I remembered these two plugs made by "Sanders". They seem very 'minimalist' with no finger guards but have sleeved pins. What the red sleeves were made of, I know not, but they have bulged a little which makes them a tight fit now. There is no cable grip and the terminals are MK style nuts & washers. In fact, they are very reminiscent of MK plugs. The cover is marked "Sanders - Wednesbury" with a letter S inside a circle. I think they possibly made switchgear as well, but maybe others are more knowledgeable than I. Cheers, Pete

Re: More old plugs!
I recognised the brand name and it has resulted in me offering some pictures for you to look at.

Re: More old plugs!
Re post #1, the larger (15A?) plug has a UK patent application number 11461/31, but this apparently relates to an application that was not granted, and at this date, applications that were not granted were not published. The patent databases show that WM Sanders of Wednesbury filed a number of patents in the 1930's for switched sockets having interlocking to prevent insertion or removal of the plug when in the ON state, and one for their own design of MK-type captive nut and washer.

Re: More old plugs!
Here's 3 more items, all no longer approved.
1) MK 13amp Single Pole, Switched Plug. 2) Fitall Plug - Patent Pending (of Coastguard Road, Larne, N.Ireland). The base plate is even held in place with 4x bBrass wood screws ! 3) Loblite Test Adaptor MK2. The MK1 had Red, Black & Green push buttons. To use, the 3 buttons are pressed (pushing on a Choc-Block) and the bare wires are then pushed into the 3 holes, buttons released and the wires are thereby clamped.

Re: More old plugs!
I recently binned a fitall plug, haven't used it for years, when I came across it again the plastic was brittle and some of the pins would not come out. Dangerous.. kept some of the (?)brass fittings.
I used to use it for my old computer on my many trips to different countries.

Re: More old plugs!
There used to be one laying about when i was a teenager. I have a feeling it was never fitted to anything. It was just too fiddly to set up and i never remember it being any more than something to fiddle with when bored.

Re: More old plugs!
I had one on a six inch extension lead to a 13A socket for a few years. It was a to wire up neatly and always seemed to be about to fall apart until finally it did

Re: More old plugs!
We used to have bags full of old plugs. I remember one 15 Amp round pin with a square body that had 2 holes in it at the top to take a 2 pin plug.

Re: More old plugs!
I have one of the Loblite plugs I use quite a lot but they aren't particularly nice to use, the buttons are too small and the springs too firm

Re: More old plugs!
Hi Camtechman,
a couple of years back I needed a plug with its own switch and indicator and remembered the MK one as your picture (1) but in brown, from around 40 years back. It was for an elderly lady's electric blanket. After some searching was pleased to find a modern equivalent available at Smiths Do-it-all diy store. Seemed no one else stocked. Sadly Do-it-all have now disappeared, but the plugs are still available at Ryness:- http://www.ryness.co.uk/products/742...with-neon.aspx However have found Ryness store prices are often far higher than those they show on the internet.
