Default Samwell & Hutton Television Wobbulator 41B

Hi,

Just thought I'd share this with you, recently found in a damp shed with some other stuff.

I let it dry out for a week and wound it up on the variac. Managed to get a trace on it. Will clearly need a bit of work but looks hopeful.

Cheers,
John Joe.

I am not suprised... Occasionally I used to travel to Eire on business.... (TV trade)..and I often thought that it could be a "hot bed" of antique electronic stuff....As most will know, Ireland is mostly rural, where a TV call out from Dublin could take all day just travelling to the customer and back, and if the set needed to go to the workshop, "double bubble".
I had to visit a repair agent in "3 Castles" south of Dublin, his workshop was in a barn, in the middle of nowhere.. To find the place, I stopped at a TV shop on the outskirts of Dublin..."never heard of it" says the guy..... it was only by chance I found it another 10 miles further on...Thus I can imaging, lots of "barns" with stuff...... that you dont get with city/town dwelling.

Is that the same type that I asked about here a few months ago? Mine didn't come with the Band 3 Adaptor, though.

Hi Wendy,

Don't know about Ireland being a hot bed of vintage electronics!!

Andy I seen your post, it certainly looks similar.

Cheers.

This brings back memories - had one myself, complete with B3 adapter - bought on Tottenham Ct Rd, London about 1971 - brought it home after a stint in Britain - and had it for a few years up to c 1986 - it worked fine once I got the hang of it

Little bit of trivia, Samwell and Hutton movements were designed and supplied by Avo during the 50's and 60's

I used one of these when I worked for Rediffusion in the 1960's. Great piece of kit once you get used to its quirks. ( The sweep can run backwards!).
I also used to go to the manufacturers in Goodmayes, Essex, for spare parts & etc.

Brings back a lot of memories. We had a number of field engineers that used to 'twiddle' IF's for no other reason than a bit of low gain, that would have been solved by valve replacement. It got so bad, that one night when I came off shift, I had a plan. The engineers used to hang up their white coats (yes, we had to look smart) & leave their trimming tools in their top pockets. So I went round & cut all the hex ends off them with wire cutters! The Sam Hutton was in regular daily use. There were quite a number of ex-govt parts used in their manufacture.

Have fun with it.

David.
