Hitachi SDT 400 tape out din
Hi And thank you for letting me join.
I have recently got my hands on a Hitachi SDT400 music center and was wondering if anyone could help with the rear tape out din socket ? i want to connect the music center to my sound system which has a 3.5mm stereo plug . i was looking on ebay and found a lead pic atached . would this work as i see not all the pins are connected. and what is this RIF switch for ? Many thanks for any replies. Rog |

Re: Hitachi SDT 400 tape out din
I think RIF stands for radio interference function. The idea was that if you were recording a radio programme on MW or LW and got interference from the recording process then switching to the alternative setting might remove the interference. What the switch does is alter the internal bias oscillator frequency.

Re: Hitachi SDT 400 tape out din
That DIN plug is correct, being the 120° version, but it will connect to only one side of the DIN socket, which could be input or output. Someone here will know if there was a standard for this.
It would be safer to find a DIN plug to two jack plugs, (I would prefer phono plugs). You will need both the IN and OUT connections if you want to play tapes into or record from the external system

So far as I know the connecting lead you show is correct, Pin 3 is the L channel signal output, Pin 5 is the R channel signal output and Pin 2 is the common ground for both channels.
The RIF switch function is as Steve says. Lawrence. |

Re: Hitachi SDT 400 tape out din
Not sure about this - it depends whether the socket is talking to the cassette deck or for use with an external tape machine. In order to allow tape machines and receivers to talk to one another with a pin-to-pin DIN cable, recorders had inputs on 1,4 and 2 and outputs on 3,5 and 2, whilst receivers were reversed - inputs on 3,5 and 2 and outputs on 1,4 and 2.

Re: Hitachi SDT 400 tape out din
Found this schematic, not a SDT-400 but a SDT-116, in that one Pins 1 and 4 are the outputs, that said the outputs from the stereo decoder are interesting as is the stereo/mono switch
