Remember that the 4408 has the same basic mechanism as the 4404 and 4407, this may help when searching for spares. I don't know about the pinch roller, but there are people selling take up turntable idler tyres for these machines (the thing that looks like a pinch roller next to the right take up turntable).

I once used an actual pinch roller from a scrap sanyo portable r2r to fix the FF on one of these Philips. Unfortunately that was 20 odd years ago and I can't recall the model.

Yeah I thought about using a Revox one , but it would have been hassle to make it fit so I paid the £16 for new rubber . I probably could have made it work but I would have to have increased the size of the pin it goes on and I really just wanted to get onto the next one so meh ...it`ll get sorted .

Any suggestions about the rubber reel brakes? Mine had perished, so I've replaced them with two brake shoes made of cork matting, but the braking still isn't quite good enough.

I have a load of old motor cycle tyres here Sue and I cut little strips of rubber and just glue them to the rail . Works just great . If you go to a scrap yard they will sell you a tyre for next to nothing and you`ll have rubber for decades ..lol

I've swapped the cork for some soft rubber, and it stops the reels very well, except the supply reel is still spilling a bit on fast forward. The internal reel clutch on this side is slightly too loose. How do you tighten this, is it adjusted with the nuts inside the spindle?

I would dismantle the reel table and have a look inside the clutch.
Do be prepared for the can of slug slime that may well be in there

Nasty! I'll have a go, keeping in mind all the tiny parts inside the spindle that may go flying. It's a pity that the repair manuals for this series of machines all seem to be in German.

There are supposed to be 4 rubber parts inside the clutch.
The problem is that they are made of normal Phillips rubber

If it is the same as mine it should have some slime in it now.

Mine's a 4407, it could be different. But the clutch makes a creak, not a squish, so I may be in luck. I'll check it tomorrow.

Nope. Anyway, there's no rubber involved, fortunately. Instead of the tri-lobed top clutch in your diagram, my 4407 has a felt ring held in place with a plastic grip. The bottom clutch is also felt, glued in place. The problem seems to be the spring that puts pressure on the top clutch. It's weak, and needs stretching out.

Re the brake rubbers - I found one in a derelict Philips deck pre-goo era. The other I made from the a wedge used for CRT scan coils. They are a pain to set up correctly, though as adjusting one affects the other....
I believe a seller in Germany does supply them with his belt kits, though the price is somewhat frightening.

Oh yes. It takes half an hour of microscopic adjustments to get both sides grabbing with equal force! By the way, does anyone sell the original triangular cross-section drive belt for these machines? I'm running mine on a round-section belt, which is OK, but it's on the way out.
