Ventilation was important and louvred slats could be opened in the side walls and also the wooden floor boards that were tarred on the underside had half inch gaps between adjacent boards to aid the passage of air. The fire is thought to have started in an office on the north side of the central transept and with a strong north westerly wind that evening it quickly made its way south.

Oh dear yes-sort of an accidental blow torch Nowadays we manage the same thing with cladding despite a regulatory system [because it's ignored and not inspected!] At least there was some excuse re relative ignorance back then. I have Radio 4 programs about the history of [largely wooden] Theatres. The number of times they burn down is pretty shocking and much worse than say Football Grounds or Railway Stations etc. I suppose all that tar and the ventilation gaps might actually make the CP Arson theory more credible.

The answer is not obvious but none the less interesting.

It would appear that the periscope was a German device. There is more about it here.

I saw that periscope, or one like it, when we took the kids to the Imperial War Museum a couple of decades ago. I had forgotten its origin.

To my surprise, a 1956 edition of 'Sir Lancelot' (just shown) was in colour. But then, on the credits, NBC Television was mentioned. This must have been a Sapphire Films export for the very early US color service.

TPTV CH 81. On again today at 17-45pm if, like me, you've missed it previously! 15 mins. Talking Pictures now mentions that it's 5, 10 or 15 minute short insert films are often not listed in schedules other than their own!

Agreed Dave, I have a link to their programme schedule on my tablet. Gives full details of all programmes, maybe up to 2 or 3 weeks ahead, can't remember. Usually at the weekend I review the following weeks programmes and set up my recorder for them. Currently have a backlog to view of maybe 20 hours recorded!

Well worth watching. Max has a radio tv workshop. A few shots included. He gets involved with a care home. My wife and I really enjoyed the uplifting story. Maybe his only starring role in a drama film?? After watching this, I was impressed with his acting, but could not find anything else.

Mon 31 May 21 12:05 A Cry From The Streets 1958. Drama starring Max Bygraves, Barbara Murray and Colin Petersen. A welfare worker becomes emotionally involved with a group of homeless children. Music by Larry Adler. (SUBTITLES AVAILABLE)

Watch it on Saturday mornings, the kids programs.
"The rocket man" etc etc etc.

Messages on screen not to let your friends bunk in the doors, don't
throw pop corn at the screen etc.
Wonderful. Takes years off your life.

Since watching it on Saturday I'm 5 years younger !

11:50 School For Secrets
1946. War. Director Peter Ustinov. Stars Ralph Richardson and Richard Attenborough. During
World War II, on the eve of the Battle of Britain, British scientists develop the first radar system.

Repeated again in the unlikely event you have not seen it before.
I might just watch it once more!

I recorded it and watched it last week. How I've never seen it before in my life is beyond me. I'd have thought in 1946 alot of what we know now was classified top secret.
