Replica U12 battery
Ok, I know I've gone totally mad, but just in case anybody else want to turn their modern AA batteries into something that looks more vintage, then, I've attached a couple of pictures for you
Just make sure the image is the right size before printing (I've written it on the side) Regards David |

Re: Replica U12 battery
Hi Darren,
So much of my youth was mis-spent with batteries that I'm pretty sure on this one... the U7/SP7 are now known (by most people anyway ) as C cells, while the unsealed version of the modern AA had in my day acquired the cumbersome designation of U12/D14. To complete the list of familiar types, the D cell was the U2, while the AAA was the U16. Nice cover, David: I may just print a few of those for a little Philips radio from about 1960 that uses the things. Not worth it for the cordless mouse Paul |

Re: Replica U12 battery
I seem to remember AA, C and D were SP7. SP11 and SP2 (or HPX for the zinc chloride types) respectively, but could be wrong.

Re: Replica U12 battery
I'm 99% certain the AA was the U7/HP7 and the C was once the U11/HP11 .
Maybe a new thread elsewhere would be appropriate on this subject ? |

Re: Replica U12 battery
Ah... yes, my memory is indeed going! Sorry about that, folks. Now that I've kicked it, yes, the AA was indeed SP7 and HP7, but a tad anomalously U12/D14 in its basic unsealed form. So presumably a simple U12 earlier, and never U7 so far as I know. And, yes, C cells were U11, SP11 and HP11...

Re: Replica U12 battery
I found this version of the U12 in a very old novelty torch at the dump years ago. AA/HP7.

Ooh... I don't suppose you'd like to soak that label off and scan it for me .

Re: Replica U12 battery
Hello Dave,
The label is hanging off anyway due to being so dry. If you PM me with your address I can forward it to scan at your leisure and return. Regards John. |

Re: Replica U12 battery
In the 1966/7 Ever Ready catalogue there are:
D size: U2, LPU2 (the designation SP2 had presumably not yet been used) and HP2 C size: U11, LPU11, HP11 AA size: HP7 and U12/D14. Note the dual designation. It's also interesting that the HP7 is listed twice, once in High Power Batteries and again in General Purpose. AAA size: U16, HP16 |

Re: Replica U12 battery
Yes: we may just have been imagining the SP7, I don't recall meeting a sealed version at all, or perhaps there was one rather later. The little hoard of defunct cells here includes a few LPU2s, a couple of U2s and a set of five SP11s found not so long ago in an early cassette recorder. I think John's U12 cell must be from the very early 60s or before, as all those I did things with in infancy were U12/D14s

Re: Replica U12 battery
I've attached another U12 cover that I've made from John's (Heatercathodeshort) battery
I think this is a later version than the first one Regards David |

Brilliant work Dave! Such a lot of work for such a tiny label.

Re: Replica U12 battery
Very sharp. Sorry about my absence--I managed to deepsix the hard drive that had all of my battery covers on it.
Fortunately I was able to recover 9/10's of them. But it took over a week and many hours each day to back everything up.
