Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
Hello everyone. So while was walking down the street yesterday, I spotted an old TV set sitting in an abandonded house. I then took a closer look and everything about it seems unknown to me. First of all, what is the "CGE TiVi" brand and who actually made this set? Secondly, the button at the bottom-right is marked "color". So I'm assuming this is an early PAL or even SECAM set since we used SECAM in Greece back in the day. I was also surprised it's a valve set and not a transistorised one. Sadly the chassis and the cabinet are in really bad shape with lots of rust, the pins of the CRT are bent and I don't think this is salvageable set at all since chances are the picture tube is bad too. I wanted to try to find the model number and the CRT number but the thing is really dirty. Any info about this set would be appreciated.

Re: Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
Looking at the scan coils and what appears to be a pincushion rod magnet attached would lead me to suspect it's monochrome, never heard of that brand and don't recognise the chassis. I would take a guess at the CRT being an A59-23W
Intriguing about the Color switch, maybe to filter out the chroma subcarrier from the video signal? Only ever seen that on the RBM A816 chassis sets. Looks repairable, are you going to try and save it? John. |

I second that - certainly looks like a 23" mono set to me, possibly Eastern European.
I can't think of any other reason for the 'color' switch than John suggests - an odd addition, though maybe necessary with SECAM transmissions? |

I had forgotten about the switch on the A816 chassis.
Yes agree this is a monochrome TV.

Re: Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
I've never seen SECAM transmissions but as the chroma was FM I believe there was no dot crawl visible or other colour signal artifacts visible on mono sets, the switch therefore would have been to remove the PAL subcarrier?

CGE sounds like a French brand, but it could possibly be manufactured in Southern Europe or locally in Greece.

Some CGE's on radiomuseum which I can't access now for some reason.

Re: Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
Bent pins on the tube do seem like a 'game over' scenario. However, there is a slim chance the tube is not up-to-air if someone just manhandled the neck PCB trying to get it off. Maybe the more experienced here have some tips for straightening them just enough to refit the board - heating them slightly then bending with needle nose pliers?

Re: Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
No need to heat them, they are generally quite soft and can be bent back carefully with pliers.

I've certainly bent them back again with pliers with no issues. But bent pins often means that the cental glass "pip" has sheared off too, which is obviously 'game over', as Ben puts it.

The plastic locating guide looks fine to me as far as I can tell and as Marteen says the pins are quite soft, just bend them back slowly. Any chance of some better pictures Fivos and that poster obviously points to CGE being an Italian manufacturer?

Yes, certainly Italian, never mind my previous post that it might be French.

Thanks for the replies and the great info! I will try my best to take more pictures and possibly find the CRT's number and the model number. That "color" button still remains a mystery though...

Have you rescued the set yet?

Here's another CGE with a "Colore" button.

Is that not a dual standard switch?

Re: Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
Just to throw into the mix, so far as I can make out in the photo in the link I posted, the left hand button has "interr" above it which I think short for interruttore (switch)
On some TV's it's shortened to "int" when the mains on/off switch is combined with the volume control. Lawrence. |

Re: Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
Just a little update. The picture tube is a Telefunken A65-11W. The label on the back is too worn so the model number is not visible. It's a model: Super Electronic...something and has some Greek writing saying it was assembled in Greece. I found the schematics inside and I attempted to scan them. Insterestingly enough, they are written in Italian. Unfortunately the whole paperwork is too large to fit in my scanner so I took some photos of the rest of the schematics. You can download them here:

Re: Unknown colour(?) set found in bad shape...
25" sets using the Mullard A65-11X or it's Mazda equivalent the CME2501 were extremely rare here in the UK. Looking at the 102 410 code on the 'dag coating suggests to me it might have been made by Mullard/Philips and relabelled Telefunken, I'm sure Maarten will tell us.
Thanks for scanning the circuit diagram. Clears up the purpose of the colore switch shown as Tasto Colore, it switches in a 34.47MHz filter which will reduce the dot crawl seen on PAL transmissions as I suspected. Odd way of doing it to me, RBM had a 4.43MHz trap in the video preamp stage if I remember correctly. John. Last edited by jayceebee; 17th Mar 2019 at 1:04 am. |
