Default Avo Multiminor Mark 5

I'd originally posted one of these in the 'For Sale' section but being as there were no takers, I thought I'd tidy it up and press it into everyday service ... after all, it's so cute

By way of a 'rainy-day' exercise, I've just finished tidying up the instruction booklet. Here's a 'before' image along with a PDF version after scanning, Paintbrush-editing & general pithering/tidying up ...

This came out nicely using 210gsm white card on my laser printer. I'm happy to produce one-offs & send by post if anyone has need - just send me a PM with your address details https://www.vintage-radio.net/images...s/thumbsup.gif

Best wishes
Guy

Hi Guy,

Excellent Job.
I don't have a MultiMinor unfortunately.

I started tidying up some AVO Schematics a while back using Photoshop, but it is
an unbelievable amount of work to get a good Job.

I'm assuming you did your tidy up Digitally, or was there an element of Old School
Editing going on as well?

Agreed it is an excellent job, I do have one of these AVOs and have just downloaded your PDF version.

Thank you very much

Glad you like it ...

@Ian: I used a combination of Microsoft Picture Manager (cropping, rotating the scans to get them 'square') and Paint to edit out artifacts, paper rips/creases and the like.

@John: you're very welcome

Just for information:

The original 'mottled leatherette' (plastic) transit case is in very poor condition - the splitting rear flap hinge and sides having been repaired with black insulating tape has resulted in adhesive residue creeping all over the outside surface. Also, there is a cardboard tray that I presume once accommodated the test leads - this was crushed and torn - see the attached photos.

The test prods are OK now they've been straightened out but I suspect these are not original. The positive lead's right-angle wander plug was evidence of another 'temporary' repair as the outer cable insulation had come adrift from the plug's plastic strain-relief moulding at some point in its past; this had been resoldered then covered with red insulation tape. For the sake of tidiness, I replaced both of the meter-side connectors with the 'scrolled pin' type of wander plug.

Another 'minor' success (pun intended) arose from pure serendipity! A few days ago, I was ferreting through some of the other toot in my garage whe I came across a waist-belt-attached type of 'man bag' - this looked like it had potential to act as a replacement for the seriously tired leatherette case ... sure enough, it accommodates the test leads, meter and has other useful little pockets in it for (say) a spare 1.5v AA cell, the instruction booklet. Pics to follow separately.

Best wishes
Guy

Hi Guy,

Have to say, it might not be the original, but I doubt
you would get a more practical Bag for the old MultiMinor
than you have there!

By the way, have you posted any AVO Serial Numbers you have
on the Multimeter Survey.
It's a Sticky Thread?

Hi Guy
I do have three 'conventional' (i.e. the heavyweight version) Avo's - I think I might have posted details of my first one some years ago * but will go through them all in due course ...
Best wishes
Guy

* (found it - it was post #840 in that 'sticky' thread - back in 2012 )

There's a certain irony to old instruments outlasting their cases, whilst there is a surplus of neat modern zip enclosures to be salvaged since their original occupants have become unreliable and joined the WEEE pile!

Thick film technology? A bit modern for me, Min.. Certainly looks lightweight though.

A few years ago I picked up two ex-services Mk5's for £1 each at a rally. One was perfect, the other had problems. I find it a very handy meter to have around; there are times when digital is just not the best way and the Mk8 I have stays 'in reserve'.
