Default Smiths Sectric Deluxe Self Starting Movement Directional Spring

Hello,
I recently acquired an ~85 year old Smiths wall clock with type 2 “deluxe” self starting movement. The synchronous motor starts right up and runs beautifully, but the spring mechanism for ensuring the self starting rotor rotates in one direction only, that being counter-clockwise (or anti-clockwise as you would say in UK) has detached. Is there anyone who could post a pic showing the detail of how this assembly is supposed to be fitted into place? I have attached a close up of the vicinity of the spring's placement and a pic of the three parts I found rattling around in the bakelite housing of the movement

Hi David and welcome,

Does this old thread answer your question, I wonder? "Catgut pegs" maybe?!

Nice clock.

If I were you I'd replace the power cord though - it looks original, which is great cosmetically but a bit risky.

Thank you. That cord is original but is from another Sectric clock, which is working but unused in my collection. I won’t be running the clock off of it.

I have a couple new old stock Wylex extra flush clock connectors and will be using one along with a new 22 gauge braided cloth pigtail and a 2 amp flex extender when I mount this clock on the wall

Lovely!

I note it's a 240V, 50Hz model. Seeing as you're in the USA, how are you dealing with that?

Thanks. I greatly appreciate you pointing out that thread, as it was the key to completing this clock. The spring serves a dual purpose: It governs the direction of the rotor, and it produces a soft tick-tick-tick sound similar to a wind up clock to indicate that the clock is running.

I have a frequency converter in the basement. It takes in American 240v 60Hz, converts it to dc, then inverts it to the 230-240v 50Hz the clock needs. Currently there are 4 wall clocks running off of it; this latest one will make 5 of them. I use 600v rated 18 gauge 2 core marine cable (similar to romex) behind the walls plus either MK or Wylex clock connectors or European 2 pin outlets to wire them up.

Pics of the converter and the clock in before restoration condition

We tend to forget that most American houses have a 120-0-120 supply, and use 240V to power things like cookers and air conditioners.
