Default Boss wants to give wife radio as birthday present.

My Boss wants to give his wife an old radio as a birthday present.

His brief for me is as follows:-

1930s if possible.
Must be wood ie light to medium oak (nothing too dark) to match his decor.
Rounded shape.
Must be able to receive radio 4.
1930s price !

There is nothing in my collection that would fit the bill, I have tried tempting him with the usual Ekcos and Bushes from later years but was met with a screwed up face and a turn up of the nose. So it seems that he wants something more "classy"?

Anybody got any ideas or anything that would fit the above brief?

Mark

Murphy A46? Don't think it's oak though.

An American Atwater-Kent cathedral job? They have a sense of occasion.

Oak would be quite a restriction, there wasn't much of it around in radio design after the late '20s when it was sometimes offered as a cheaper alternative to mahogany or walnut. I've a 1929 Columbia radiogram in quite a light oak but it's not a radio, isn't rounded, and without a couple of very scarce and obscure valves it won't be receiving anything.

If the wood doesn't matter, a nice Philips 634A would tick all the boxes aside from price. If that one's essential the good lady might have to settle for its late '70s 2/3-scale repro version...

It would look good but might not have a LW band and there aren't many areas with R4 MW coverage.

One of the Pye rising sun sets? Again, probably not oak but they didn't slap on the dark stain.

Thanks for all your suggestions which I will put to him, sorry he didn't stipulate that it must be oak, I just suggested it as an example of the shade he is after. He did say though, definitely not mahogany.

Not rounded or '30s, but easy on the eye:

Hello,
British Philco made a number of cathedral sets with rounded tops and the British models usually have LW. They are not cheap though.
Two examples

Or there's the 1931 Ultra Tiger III, middling rather than dark in shade, probably easier to find than the Philcos and likely to be less costly than a Philips 634A.

"1930's if possible" hmmm, wood or wood effect, rounded styling, 1930's price, radio 4, he may be rather difficult to please and must accept the shortcomings of early vintage radios. For something that will come on instantly with no pops, crackles, whistles, drift or mains hum maybe a wood effect Bush TR82/97 would do the trick, they have been mistaken for 1930's sets in the popular media after all.

Yes he is a very difficult boss to please! He likes the looks of those cheap nasty modern 1930s replicas, he has now been educated.

The advanced A92 "Stationmaster" set might appeal to an autocratic vanity Mark? He'd never get the joke. I bought one from an "old boy" who recalled that they were the Officer's Radio on troop trains! Train Station. Radio Station. Social Station! "Entering into a Station" Stupid Virgin train speak

A92? It looks like an ipod dock for a fifties bakelite radio

How about an A146C. The veneer was fairly light and the whole set's curved. Definitely got presence.

Hello.
Of the Murphy sets the 1938 A46 comes quite close.

Isn't the problem going to be that having identified a suitable set it might be very difficult to obtain one in good working order and cosmetic condition?

The 46 excellent but possibly too big or plain for the fussy recipient. By coincidence there is an A92 on sale from this morning-only £30! I paid 30 for one and 25 for the "Railway"/Radio version some time ago but prior to that, they seemed very hard to get hold of and much more expensive. Supply and demand I suppose. I got interested in these because of the RF stage which made them superior and the only semi-comms set available when the War started, as described in "Sets For Sale". They look even better in the flesh David and I wouldn't demean one with an Ipod I should have said that the Stationmaster model is ID'd by the little map on the dial [it took me a while to find that out] but it wouldn't be an essential consideration if the 92 lived up to the requirements of the customer!
