Default Sony SLV-E730 VCR Power problems

today I went to use my Sony SLV-E730 VCR only to find instead of powering up, it just was making a slight buzzing noise & the power light was flashing.

A quick Google seach suggested 2 of the capacitors, C153(47UF50V) &C154 (1UF63V) might need replacing to sort this out, as it seems to be a common problem.

I'm not sure I can perform this work myself, as it requires some disassembly including desoldering the can around the PSU. I have been able to find a circuit diagram online.

Apparently a temporary "fix" is to warm up the PSU with a hairdryer, but only as a last resort!

Normally I keep this item plugged in, which apparently keeps things warm enough to stop any trouble, but recently I had a power cut, which must have allowed it to cool down.

I've wondered if there was anyone in the Manchester area with more experience than me who could help me out, I know some people at Mikey's event were local to me, but I'm almost as bad as him for remembering people's names!

There's some other jobs I might help on, but that's worth another thread!

If anyone else can help let me know.

This is what happens with power cuts,it show the caps up that are drying out.

I would NOT plug in till the caps which are cheap and easy to replace are done.10 min job.

Thanks for the advice, I've heard of similar things happening with early Sky Digital boxes.

I'm a little unsure how much disassembly is required

I have that exact model. It was given to me as a dead machine. The main smoothing cap was s\c. Access, as you say, isn't easy but with a good iron is possible. An excellent performer.

Thanks for the feedback, I've found a service manual covering what sounds like the right the family of machines, but the component designations are different from the separate power unit schematic I've found.

If I can get this fixed, should I in future keep my SLV-E730 disconnected from the mains when not using it to stop this problem from happening again? I assume the years of near constant exposure to heat while charged up was the cause of the problem.

I have a spare e-on remote control activated power saver I could use to save having to switch it on at the wall each time.

Hi
A 10 minute job might be a tad optimistic as that tin can has to come out and be disassembled. Tip: Make sure you remember which way round the various bits of metal and plastic go
If you use 105 degree parts from, say, Panasonic then you shouldn't have any problems if you leave it in standby. Also there are a few very small high value resistors in there as a chain - 150k springs to mind - change them too. While you're at it I'd replace the main smoother as well. Then you can be sure of a good reliable machine.

I used to tell my pal it was a 10 min job when I had G decks that needed gears!

Always kept away from those where possible, rebuilding power supplies are a nice steady job ,if you take your time.

1uF,s were always the main suspect though for long term reliability you need to check/change a few others.

As I posted earlier, and as Glyn has said, the res. cap as well. I've done a few where they go almost s\c. Great machines too.

Mr Boxer - I have a G2 deck that munches gears here to repair for a member! He's sourced the gears, sadly. I'd give you 15 minutes....

I have never done a G deck at all.Was ok on the K deck with the load motor coupling and also changing the slider assembly though.

I used to stick to fitting mode switches and pinch rollers on the G type.

Thanks for the tips, I've attached a schematic of the PSU to help with identifying components.

https://www.avforums.com/threads/my-...s-died.730799/

This link is where I got the suggested solutions, which don't refer to any other components giving trouble, but were written a few years ago.

Basically change all the electrolytics in the can with 105 degree Panasonic (or similar) parts. There aren't many. Change the high-value resistors with bigger metal film ones. Then fit a replacement mains electroytic. You then should have an uncle going by the name of Robert.

Thanks for the information, I hope this won't be too much for me.

Due to my busy social schedule it well be a few weeks before I can get round to doing any work on this.

I've not been able to find a service manual with any disassembly instructions yet, but it seems the PSU can be removed as a separate unit so I can work on it without having to lug the whole VCR onto the bench.

It's quite easy to work on. The power board comes out after rmoving a few screws. Just make sure all the pins and lugs on the PSU module are fully desoldered when you come to take this off the board.

I've not yet ordered the replacement capacitors yet, I've been able to source some Panansonic 47uF 50V ones OK, but Panasonic 1uF 63V caps seem to be harder to find.

I've made some progress in a roundabout way:

I managed to find another working SLV-E730 but in not so good condition & no remote.

As I needed to remove a tape from mine, I transplanted the power unit from the donor VCR into mine & now it's working OK.

I've kept the bad power unit handy so I'll be able to recap it when I have the time & sourced the replacement caps.

The donor VCR will be kept as a spare.
