Default ATM Telegraphy unit dated 1917

Found this on a charity stall at the carboot. At the time I had not noticed the ATM Co Ltd and 1917 engraved on the 'key'. They wouldn't take less then £5 but it looked interesting and should polish up and look good on a wall.

Now I know it is dated 1917, I assume this is 1st world war? It doesn't look like a field unit, anyone know what it would have been used for? I assume the empty space is where the sounder would have been. What would it have looked like?

Do the top terminals also say L and E?
Perhaps used on an "omnibus" circuit for sending either way, identifying the recipient by call sign.

The missing sounder may have looked like this ATM example.

"The Telegraph Office" web site Foreign Key section give info on a baseboard which looks identical, with sounder and galvanometer, made by Gilbert Bros and used early in WW1.

A steal at £5 just for the key!

Finding a sounder to complete it may well be a rather different story...........

Perhaps the "works" of an old doorbell might do for appearance and some functionality.

Cleaned and ready to be used as a sound board for the door bell. Done the minimal, cleaned the brass off with Viakal, washing up liquid, then a spray of WD40 leaving whats left of the original varnish. Base given a work over with fine grade wire wool and a white spirit and boiled linseed oil mix followed by beeswax polish.
