Default Anglepoise Lamp

Hi all,

I have this Anglepoise lamp, 40s/50s it has a bakelite crabtree lamp holder.

My question is, can this crabtree be taken apart for cleaning? The springs have weakened a bit and could do with retensioning or replacing.

Has anyone attempted this before?

I've never seen one that cannot be taken apart.

Thumbs up Re: Anglepoise Lamp

I have successfully taken it apart, the switch unscrews completely and the switching system comes out. Unscrew the pins inside and the springloaded pins for the bulbs comes out.

It is basically a metal cylinder in a metal barrell, it cannot be taken apart but fortunately there is a access hole where the screw goes in. Carefully not damaging the thread I inserted a makeshift spring from a pen cutting it at a correct length so the screw can easily be reinserted back into the thread.

After a few tries putting the fiddly switch back together I have a anglepoise lamp that flickers no more!

Time for a beer!

Repair rather than replace.
It's what the Forum is all about.

Just took a look at the Anglepoise Lamps on sale in John Lewis store in Cardiff, the price £350 !
I also note that the metal body is not earthed, but carries the symbol for double insulated. I took a look at a range of similar lamps and they also were not earthed and carried the symbol for double insulated i.e. two squares. 🔲 sorry can’t do two squares.
Cheers

Earthing's old hat now.
I bought a brass standard lamp from B&Q some time ago. Two brass poles supported by half-a-hundredweight of cast iron.
Made in China, no earth required!

If the lampholder itself were plastic and the cable twin with sheath, then no earth would be required since there's no way for the metal to become live.

It seems that not all metal-cased items need to be earthed. I have an old GEC fan heater that has metal case and bears the double square mark. It was being thrown out at work after the electrician failed it for having no earth connection. At some point the mains lead had been replaced by 3 core and the earth had been cut short and not connected at either end. I took the heater apart and confirmed that it was indeed double insulated, with two insulation barriers between the live parts and the exterior metal case, and it is now used in the shed.

Surely a double insulated item should be failed only if it has an earth connection? Maybe that was the problem: it looked like it might have an earth connection, or perhaps it looked like it ought to have an earth connection.

Yes, double insulated symbol + 3-core mains lead = botch job IMHO.
