Default AVO Mk8 case repair.

Got this mk8 arrive, was in a state well, after struggling trying to get the bakelite case out of the steel case ,i resorted to smashing it out!, wasnt realy bothered as i had another spare, the spare had a damaged corner, so made a mould for the busted corner out of bits of the case i smashed up, i smeared the inside corner of the steel case with grease, as a release agent, then pilled a big wad of p40 after inserting the damaged bakalite case into the steel outer, then befor the fiberglass mix set i clamped the old piece of bakelite corner piece on the inside of the two cases with a pair of mole grips and let it set, after some carefull trimming with a rotary burr if fits together like a glove, i mixed coffee powder in the resin, it almost matches color wise, not to bothered as i will spray it and its not visible once the metal outer is fitted, talking of which what color should the steel outer be ,hard to tell as it was repainted badly and the inner surface of the steel was a sort of gold hammer finish, it's just in self etch primer at the moment, will buy some spray paint and clearcoat when i know what color to get, see pics . so folks should the outer steel case be black or brown, or a gold hammer finish like the paint was on the inside?

thanks in advance.

The Steel Shell on the Avometers could be a number of different Colours.

A Hammered Silver Finish was common, but more so on the Model 7's.

A Matt Grey/Blue is commonly found on Early Military Avo 8's.
Yours is clearly Military, but probably not old enough.

However, the most common colour for the Pan-Climatic Avo 8, which
is the version you have there, seems to be the Hammered Gold Colour.

The fact that you have found this colour oversprayed on the inside of the Shell,
pretty much confirms your Meter would have had the Hammered Gold finish.

Am I thick or is there no visible damage to the Avo in the photos?

Your definately not Thick !

The Photos were probably not the best choice for the Subject Matter in question.

The OP was referring to the Back Case that has been removed before those
Photos were taken.
So yes, you are correct, there is no apparent damage to the Meter workings
themselves! (Hopefully).

Wondered what an AVO Mk8 was since the AVO 8 only got up to Mk7. The pictures explained- it's an earlyish AVO 8 Mk?

I wondered that too. It's a Mk2 or Mk3.

well the ser no is:22152-c-354,also it doesent have the small raised divit between the range knobs where the mk normaly is,so i assume its an early mk1,this is my other meter we are talking about that reads high, not the panclimatic, maybe i should of made it clear, its the one in the second set of pics.

Maybe it's had the movement swapped out for an earlier model, the front of that is a late Mk2 or Mk3. The Mk1 is different in appearance from the DC ranges and the test lead connectors would be the domed headed ones.

well the movement doesent have painted magnets and the front connectors accept lug type probes,as in there is no hole in them for a banana plug, see pic attached, its a mk1 as far as i can tell.

The photos on post 1 are not of a MK1. You've now posted a completely different photo of a different meter.

heres some pics of the panclimatic tidied up,some pics as well of what i used to redo the lettering,i went to the local car shop to get some white cellulose touch up,got this thing as per pic,it has a brush also under the cover a almost like a hyperdermic needle, made redooing the lettering a doddle,it was brilliant white, after removing the excess paint with cotton buds and thinners,i gave it a final polish on the lettering with brasso(after masking off),the brasso yellowed the white paint, makes it look more original, the paint on the case ,is hammerite hammer finish, although it doesent display the hammer finish, the paint was ok when it was finiganns the company who now have the brand have ruined it,it doesent give a hammer finish and is like gnatts ****,i have emailed the company to complain but nothing heard from them yet.
