Default Grundig TK146 won't erase

Hi
I have a Grundig TK146 that won't erase, does anyone know if this is a stock fault or will have to excersise my (rather rusty ) fault finding skills.

I have checked that the record switch is being operated by the mechanism and that the "Trick" switch is not causing the fault (as I suspected it may be)
Thanks in advance

Andrew

Thumbs up Re: Grundig TK146 won't erase

Hello Andrew, Re. your 146 , I presume you have checked that the machine records, on a blank tape!!

Assumng erase head OK, check the very fine wires at rear of head switching block, also check that switch contact tt is OPERATED in both of the record positions, non operated in trick position . Could be poor or non contact, I also assume you don't have a suitable meter to hand to check the erase voltage?

Cheers.

Default Re: Grundig TK146 won't erase

I checked the wiring on the head block which is OK, and since starting this thread things have progressed a little.

The machine now erases/records on both blank and used tapes, the fault (I suspect) being switch contact tt being tarnished (having since cleaned it), voltage checks in this area were a little inconclusive though.

I have noticed, however, that the record level control does not fully reduce the signal to zero in the manual mode - is this as Grundig intended in the design or should I be looking for another fault? (I suspect that this may be nothing more than worn/tarnished contacts on the Record/Play switch).
