Unusual reels
I had a friend come over today who supplied me with 4 7 inch metal NAB reels, I have never seen these before, they do look very unusual indeed

Re: Unusual reels
Oh yes, large centre spools(Nab size).
I beleive these are for use with 7" spools on the magazine side and empty 10.5" NAB spool on the take up side. It's an attempt to minimise problems on some recorders caused by different spool centre sizes(imagine a 5" spool and nab take up!!) on machines with regulated speed contol. Some REVOX models have a reel size button which compensates electronically. I have seen plastic versions of NAB centre 7" spools, although usually supplied with pre-recorder media. Handy for short lengths of tape too of course, in above circumstances. Cheers Tim PS Lovely Nagra!!

Re: Unusual reels
Cheers for all your responses. my friend got them from a radio place or something, brand new and never used, I must admit these are the first ones I have ever seen with the large nab centres on 7 inch reels, I have seen plastic reels with large hubs but always had a Cine centre. As for swaps or sale? I brought a Nagra over a year ago and regretted selling it, I have just today got this Nagra and have been fiddling with it all day. These are awesome recorders, I now have three of them and a very empty bank balance.

Re: Unusual reels

Re: Unusual reels
Hi
THREE Nagras - that's greedy! When I worked in a film studio there used to be an adaptor which fitted over the spools so the machine could use 10.5" reels - probably cost almost as much as the Nagra! Not seen one since.. Glyn |

Re: Unusual reels
the 10.5" adaptor is called the QGB, I sold mine for £500, my friend sold his on a known site for £909 yesterday ! The Tandberg I think is a series 2, it says Tandberg series 2 hi-fi 3 speed, cost me £1 and about £10 to restore, looks great !

It just won't do you know, it won't do at all. |

Re: Unusual reels
Hello, I do not know why the first pics have died, must have been removed from my server. The recorder in the little hole in the wall is a A77 MK V with Dolby, I am very fond of this machine.
