Sony C9 betamax recorder.
This should have been a nice easy repair, no video from the BNC socket, that was repaired in 10 minutes, but then the cassette housing jammed.
I've manage to get the cassette housing out & remove the tape. Now a cassette loads and lowers onto the deck, but the deck will not load and then the eject light flashes. I can see no reason why it should be behaving like that, it did work before. The service manual doesn't really help. |

Now isn't that interesting, I have a machine here that also does that, and so far it's eluded me as to why. Mmmm...

Did the tape unlace before the carriage jammed?
I'm sure there's a microswitch under the carriage, so it's possible that's not being made. |

Re: Sony C9 betamax recorder.
How is the tape end detected? is it an led or a lamp? Its over 20 years since I repaired a Betamax VCR. even then I didn't see that many.
Cassette lamp failure would cause machines to cut off Leds would not fail as such but could get clouted by a cassette thereby not pointing at the end sensors or not illuminating due to broken connections. Loading belt? sometimes would slip before loading was completed ? May not apply to your machine but worth a quick look? Rich. |

Re: Sony C9 betamax recorder.
Betamax doesn't use lamps or leds. It uses foil which alters the frequency of an oscillator and that sends a signal to the microprocessor.
I've checked the tape in switch and it is working |

Re: Sony C9 betamax recorder.
Might be worth a quick check round and make sure none of the circuit protectors have failed, especially the 'n' type that look like transistors, they used to cause various strange faults when o/c.

Re: Sony C9 betamax recorder.
I checked the fuses and they were OK more to the point I found that if you operated the cassette housing out of the machine, it loaded and unloaded as if there was a tape.
Put the housing back and it didn't like it! I eventually found it had something to do with the unlocking bar being slightly bent, I bent it back by pushing hard on it and that seems to have cured it! BUT now I have another fault: in both FF or REW the machine operates for a second or two then stops, you can try it time after time but it still stops after a couple of seconds. Its ok in picture search both ways. Any ideas? |

Re: Sony C9 betamax recorder.
Have a look at the Betamax Pal site, according to the fault guide it could be faulty capacitors in the take up/supply spool sensors circuit, CP0005 and CP033. there could be up to ten caps on board SS11, marked IC003/IC002 and /IC610 ,ranging from 1uF -50V to 10uF-50V

Yes, i confirmed the SL-C9E need a complete recap of the SS-11 Board.
And look for bad corroded traces, on the Servo board. This cause trouble on the reel assy. |
