Watching TV on vintage sets...
Hi,
Do you have trouble with teletext or color or a missing pedestal? I made a little PCB that solves your problems. It contains very usefull stages too. Please read the text attached. If you have questions, I am happy to answer and discuss them here. Thanks to Paul Stenning for giving me permission to pose it in the forum. Kind regards Darius PS: The discription will be continued. I think the vision amp Q10 Q2 is a Darius development, never seen before. This is why I showed how to calculate it. The PNP- modulator driver schematic comes next. The NPN- modulator driver that is importand for 405 is tested at the moment. I noticed that it is possible to uploade bigger files now. Thanks |

Re: Watching TV on vintage sets...
Hi, here you can see how it acts.
In the first two pics you can see how the color is supressed. In the next pics you can see how the teletext is supressed. Some sets have more or less problems with the teletext. I modified my sets and I bring them back to original step by step. continued... Darius |

I'm not a vintage TV owner, Darius, but your device looks impressive, in terms of its usefulness, simplicity to build and professional construction (as usual).
Well done, and all the best for 2006, Nick |

Re: Watching TV on vintage sets...
Hi,
I picked up some waveforms of the vision output for you. In the 1.pic you can see the signal with teletext. I connected anode D3 to GND with an alligator clip. 2. pic showes the teletext supressed. Please not that the burst is untouched. Importand for vintage color sets. 3. pic showes a line with color. 4. pic colour trap on. 5. pic no text no colour and V- sync pedestal added. The pedestal was added in the vintage 625 and 525 line signal. It helps to supress retrace (flyback) lines. Often people think the tube is bad, but the faut is teletext and the missing pedestal! Kind regards Darius |

Yes, of course it is usefull with NTSC. If you use it for color sets you don't have to load the components for the color trap L1 C16/17 Q12 R36/38. Next time I'll test the values for R31 L1 C16/17 for use as a 3,5MHz sound trap (used in 405) and NTSC color trap. Yes, the PCB's are available. I am going to make a kit that contains the PCB and the components because some components TL431, BF496/50, LM1881 are not easy to get in an electronic shop I think. The kit costs 18 Euros. Including postage to worldwide in a big letter will be 25 Dollar/ Euros or so. If you order more than one, or the PCB only, it will be cheeper of course. Kind regards Darius PS: You can read the discription in german language there: http://www.vvt-europe.de/angebote/darius/darius.htm |

Good evening,
I got some orders and made some kits and updated the schematic. Q8 is the reference voltage switch. Kind regards Darius |

now I knew it exactly. I'll sent it in a big registred letter. Sent to Germany 3,05 Euros; EU 4,55 Euros; Worldwide 6,05 Euros and the 18 Euros for the kit. For example airsure to USA costs 24,05 Euros. It is possible to pack two kits in one big letter. Kind regards Darius |

Re: Watching TV on vintage sets...
Hi Darius, This looks like another useful quality piece of kit and i will send you a P.M .to order one.
I can already vouch for the quality of Darius's items i have two of them here and they are in constant use,the Mk1 or is it Mk2? converter/modulator is used daily and gives exceptional results on a Ekco TCG 316. Well done Darius. Mike P.S. Disaster .........while typing this another workhorse (PYE PTV) has just gone off with a very nasty smell........a quick look inside reveals a puddle of melted pitch under the LOPT.........OHHH DEAR. |

Re: Watching TV on vintage sets...
Thanks Mike, you have the MK I.
Hi, I want to show you the fundamental schematics of the pnp and npn modulators. They get their signal and biasing from the UVB. The pictures show two pnp modulators driven from the UVB. One is for the german ch4 and parallelsound, the other one is for ch R1 and R2 OIRT . The OIRT has intercarrier FM sound and a switchable oscillator in the right. In the left of this picture you can see the pnp modulator with its filterbanch, attenuator and isulating caps at the output. The filter is not a must, It is fun for me to make them and so I did it. I'll upgrade my London Birmingham modulator with the UVB too and put the pics in it's thard. (Hope to make this in february.) Kind regards Darius |

Re: Watching TV on vintage sets...
Good evening,
I just finished the schematic for the UVB loaded with parts for the PNP modulator. In the picture you can see the UVB in the ch4 parallel sound modulator. The vero board in the left is for sound. Kind regards Darius |

At the moment I am working on a Tesla 4001.
I made a screenshot with and without UVB. It is impressive isn't it? Kind regards Darius |

Re: Watching TV on vintage sets...
Hi Darius,
I have got a vintage colour television monitor from 1968. It is a MC 47 3 BA, made by the Fernseh G.m.b.H with a 1842P22 crt. The PAL module and the line output unit were made by Telefunken. This monitor requires RGB or FBA(S) signals. After fixing it (bad PL509), the screen remained dark. Only with FBAS it didn't work. It needs a separate synchron signal. If I connect the synchron input with the FBAS-out of my DVD player, there is only noise in the synchronisation. Is it possible to get the pure synchron signal out of your PCB for driving the monitor. Kind regards, Eckhard |

Not sure what FBA means. Presumably it's a German acronym. Is it the same as CVBS or composite video? |

It is hard to understand the circuits without the schematics. Eckhard |

Re: Watching TV on vintage sets...
Looks like it's all transistorised except for the line output stage. I cannot see a separate EHT generator which was common in professional monitors.
There are lots of cans that look like relays for switching the inputs. Is it possible that a relay that switches the sync signals is faulty? Most professional monitors have a switch for internal/external sync. Make sure this is working OK. |
