A very large collection by the look of it. If from mostly one source, is it anyone we know?

Can anyone identify item #510?

Its auction description is: "A standard broadcast vintage radio transmitter, W. 51cm" Its clearly totally wrong! It isn't a transmitter - at least it has no controls on the front panel which a transmitter would normally need!

What it does appear to be is a general coverage receiver, but going from 550kc/s to just over 100Mc/s. Continuous coverage in 6 bands. And AM, CW, FM and PM modes. And 6 selectivity settings.

I'm only slightly temped to bid on this thing to take a closer look. But at 22% premiums plus VAT on top, plus then what will doubtless be very expensive shipping across the country, I would only bid peanuts on the item!

(Warning to anyone thinking of bidding. Whatever you bid online, your bid price will be multipled by 1.464 - and that's before shipping is added!!)

To answer my own question its a Hallicrafters SX-62 (or 62A) - as described here: https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/hallic...62a_sx62a.html

There's another page about it here. If this one goes for anything like the minimum "used price" ($200) shown here, it will be several times what I would be prepared to spend....!

Lot 531 https://auctions.chalkwellauctions.c...portable-radio

Oh dear I thought it was a tape recorder but what do I know.......it does have knobs and a dial so maybe it is a radio

To be fair I don't envy the poor soul who was given the mammoth task of cataloguing 278 radio related lots, and the majority have more than one item per lot, so the odd mistake can be forgiven.

I'm afraid I lost all faith in "professional auctioneers" after I rang one of the really big ones to enquire about a lot they had sold. It was a R109 military (WWII) receiver, for which a really good one might fetch £300. They told me it an extremely rare "WWII spyset", and it had sold for £2,700.

They were definitely wrong on the spyset - but maybe they found a pair of totally daft buyers?

I think Alvin might be right about some unfortunate staff member being given a tricky job there but do we really want "specialist valuers/identifiers" in that situation There seemed to be two identical Radiograms that are really radios and I suspect the Hallicrafter "TX" was only misnamed because it was next to the KW, Richard. I was amused by the adopted term for the two consoles at 579 ie "self standing" I noticed the Deccalian 90 at 578 isn't described as a Radiogram. Presumably a mid range Decca item as opposed to the bigger RG's in their range? Certainly a lot to go at. Weren't we just discussing collecting v hoarding on the "Future of Vintage Electronics" thread?

One thing struck me when looking through the lots in this auction.

All the statues, ornaments, paintings, records, cars, furniture, etc. have 'estimates', but not a single radio lot has one.

Actually there is just one as Lot 778 has an estimate - if you select 'Estimate High To Low' in the sort by box it comes to the top of the list.

The boxes the valves are contained in must be rare or expensive, because they're not included!
I wonder if it's all from one collector?

Well I took a drive down to Southend today to pick up the lots I won. Prices were very reasonable in my opinion and I was able to replace a few sets that I was forced to sell over the last couple of years. Most are in really nice condition and some show signs of restoration.

I was very tempted to buy more but I only just managed to fit all my ones in the car and that was with the passenger seat removed! I see a lot of them have now appeared for sale again at vastly inflated prices. It's sad to see collections split up but at least the sets will find loving homes.

Prices at an auction are always going to be "very reasonable" when there is no sensible shipping option. Its usually a mistake selling on Ebay to insist on "collection only". In our field, that often results in no sale at all - or if you are lucky someone rolls up and pays just the start price. Effectively you eliminate 90% or more of the potential market for an item, just because they don't happen to live where the sale is.

I contact the auctioneers about the Hallicrafters SX-62A I mentioned earlier in the thread. I asked what the shipping price would be. "We can't ship that" was the response. Really? My thought was "what one earth are you doing pretending to be shipping agents then?" And that we me out of the sale......

You take out most of the potential buyers, and funnily enough the prices end up being "very reasonable"!!

Radios have lost all interest these days other than a few cult models and even those only raise a fraction of yesterday's prices. The prices reflect that. Such a pity but with a large number to dispose of in one go, it must be overwhelming.

I suspect a lot of us are coming up to 'disposal' time. John.

For those of us that have an idea how to fix them its a great time to collect old radios as values are now low particularly if not working.
However, It is worrying to think many might be thrown away because people might decide it's not worth the bother in tying to sell them.

Hello,

Just found this thread... Oh well another case of Terry and the obvious

Regards post #2, when I picked up the radio in this thread https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=174129 I did ask the name of the person to whom the collection belonged to and I was told it was a Mr Buckhurst, who lived in the local area to the auction room in Southend.

Regards
Terry

My other half hails from Poland and has an interest in the aesthetics of old radios and especially their dials and cabinet work. She recently bid on a GEC BC4750, which after attention to the caps plays very well ...we walked away from the Chalkwell auction with a Tesla R4 Czech built Hungarian Military Rx ( less PSU ) an Eddystone 730/4 (for me to relive CCF days) a very ‘Goth’ Ekco U49 and a 4 Speaker Grundig ‘Hi Fi 5077WE. The last of these reminded my wife of a similar model owned by her maternal grandmother in the “ old upper Silesia”. The “aerial arrangements” was a short length of wire to the window frame and “earthing” consisted of another short length of wire to a plant pot containing an aspidistra. The aspidistra was watered regularly and was doing surprisingly well. The family matriarch was in her eighties at the time, and she jealously defended the status of her technological arrangements. She regularly listened to both Radio Free Europe and Vatican Radio. The latter we think might have something to do with her surviving the electrical arrangements!

The RGD model 625 made sad, it was one of my family radios back in the 1940's. It went for £100. I would have been glad to pay more than that!

Probably because it's got a triode output, although not the more desirable type, thankfully.

I recall a couple of the control knobs had dual function when pushed in / pulled out. I think one ( wavechange ? ) was for bandspead tuning.

I cannot remember what the other knob was used for.
