It's actually the EHT rectifier part that has failed, on the top of the transformer. We tried the set, and a picture did appear, but suddenly vanished after a short while. Paul did indeed say he thought he could smell something burning - he has a better sense of smell than me - and indeed when we looked, a spot on the top of the rectifier was "bubbling". It's an encapsulated unit, "hard wired" to the overwind on the LOPT itself but as Kevin had done in a post above, this can no doubt be replaced with a suitable EHT diode...
Perhaps the original unit is using the "infamous" selenium discs, it's certainly big enough, but there was no "bad" smell associated with one of these units dying.
