Smile Baird 301...bin it or fix it?

I acquired one of these for the sum of £1- a while back.

It's complete and in reasonable condition except.........the tuning scale is broken in about three places with bits missing.

My question is, is it worth bothering with?

It's fairly clean inside and the iron checks out ok. It will need all of it's Hunts caps changed, plus a bit of tarting up.
Anyone had any experience of these seemingly rare but cheap sets?

Many thanks

Sorry to reply to my own post, I had thought I'd posted this thread in General Vintage Radio etc

A thousand apologies.

I'm sure the mods will move it !

Pity the scale is broken. I'm looking for one of these with a good scale...! They are good sets and well worth restoring. They sound excellent. Mine was very tired when I got it but with a cabinet refinish and new capacitors it now sounds superb. The scale on mine is broken at the right-hand end behind the tuning knob. Otherwise it's in very good condition.

You may be able to reproduce the scale and print it onto transfer paper then sandwich it between two pieces of glass cut to the correct size. I never bothered with mine because it's only cracked behind the tuning knob. The rest of the scale is fine.

Even if you don't fix it, it's useful for spares.

They are not particularly rare!

Many thanks for your reply, Richard.
I most likely will get it going, as I rather like it! One of those things, I guess. It's just such a shame about the scale.
It's broken by each knob, so I have three seperate pieces. The sad thing is, there are bits missing. Luckily, the scale area itself is not affected. I had wondered about gluing the remnants to a new piece of glass, and then trying to fill and re-touch the missing areas.
It's sat there, naked on the becnh at the mo'; so I'll probably have a look over the Bank Hol.
BTW, I read your comments; and those of Mr. Poole here with interest.

Yes well I think that repair probably did not have a good speaker fitted. There is no lack of bass or treble on mine....and the pre-emphsis is working fine.

Yes - I wouldn't take Mr Poole's approach to restoration too seriously. You don't want to know about the parts of his restoration articles that I didn't publish.....

Sorry. That should read de-emphasis!
