PS!

The reason I didn't collect more Teks was because pocket money didn't permit getting more from eBay and I have no way of getting to fairs and rallies on my own because I'm off the road still awaiting eye–surgery !

(Also a personal preference for those with British written and drawn manuals !)

Oh yes, I forgot one or two !

44) Gould "Classic" 6100, colour screen TFT ;
45) One TQ CT71 Curve Tracer !

Ah, the old Tek 465 the bane of repairers the world over. Thought about getting one but think I'll stick with my Tek 545B and 585A which double as workshop heaters, essential this time of year. At least there are no hard to remove PCB's in 500 series, Tek scopes went downhill after 500 series, servicing wise. I have a SC502, sandwiched PCB's, dodgy attenuator switches, nightmare to repair.

5000 and 7000 plugin's are great an everything, we can play Thunderbirds with scope plugin's but horrors to repair. Analogous would be 500 plugin's are like working on an old moggy minor and 5000/7000 plugin's = a nightmare of pipes and knuckle smashing torture that is any car built after 1980 ish

Tek 545B
585A
535A
SC502
HP140B
TQ S51
D43
BWD881
That's more than enough scopes, I have a one in, one out rule, I'm getting older and more stupid and therefore might not last, Bog forbid someone having to try and shift those vintage scopes let alone more should I croak.

Andy.

Indeed they are, all three of mine have been nothing but trouble and they're difficult to work on. I forgot I also have a Tek 453, which is very nice to use.

No, that's not a "Wish List", I DO possess all those listed in my initial post, much to the chagrin of the ranting and raving friend I live with!

Most have been organised into racks in the former back bedroom, but there are a few in piles all around and under my bed as well!

I'll post some pics when I get back from my sister's after the Christmas Holidays!

As I said, my current project is a Cossor CDU130 repair, of which I have two, plus a "parts mule" for spares, both non–working on the mains supply or the rechargeable batteries !

Hi!

Evening Les!

Yes, you're right – I did miss off the D83 that I forgot about! That brings the total count (so far!) to 54 repairable Oscilloscope projects worth working on, not counting the incomplete/damaged units only fit for use as parts mules!

For example, I found the O.U. "Generatorscope HK/2A" has, like the Cossor CDU130A, a separate front panel piece with the overlay printed on it, so I can transfer the better front panel from the unit it's currently fitted to with a damaged back panel to my other one which has a good back panel but a very poor/damaged front panel, making a reasonable one out of two!

I've got a few scopes here and some never get used. Some are rescue scopes saved from a trip to the the company skip.

My day to day scopes are a really nice old 500MHz HP 54825A Infinium DSO (rescued from the skip!) and a Tek 465 100MHz. I also have a little Tek TDS2012 DSO.

I still also have my Tek 585 from my student days although it is sulking unused in a corner of the garage.

My other scopes are as below although they haven't been powered/used for many years. They are all playing sardines under the stairs somewhere.

Hameg HM1004-3 100MHz rescued from the skip, fully working?
Hameg HM1007 100MHz rescued from the skip, fully working?
HP54540C 500MHz DSO rescued from the skip, fully working?
Solartron A100 30MHz (a really nice little scope, it was fully working but the switches needed a clean 10 years ago!)

Might be an idea to take the valves out and store as they're likely to go to air in a cold garage. I love my 500 series Tek scopes, they often need fixing but mostly they work great. Not a tantalum, rare IC or FET in sight, hooorah!

I'm hoping the 585 will be OK as the garage is integral to the house but I do feel a bit guilty leaving it in the garage. It still works but it does need to have some paper capacitors replaced. I can't remember now but they are long tube shaped caps and presumably long obsolete. It does still work with the tired caps but not as well as it should. I think I was about 20 years old when I bought it and it went everywhere I lived as a student. It was a great way to heat the room in the winter and I often went to sleep listening to the valves cooling down. Ever since, the plinking sound of the 585 when it is cooling down takes me right back to being a student again...

Alas to say, my friend's house, dating from the era of the "Jerry Builder", is one of those with just one socket outlet per room, so we have to make do with innumerable 4 way extension thingys from Wilko to connect all our stuff – there is enough juice to operate the '545A tho', when I tested it I got half an inch of Timebase along the left side of the screen, (and no vertical deflection!) that lit up for half a dozen sweeps and then went off, together with a smell of smouldering from somewhere, so I've decided to leave that one till the very last, when all the others are fixed, because of its size!

Our house electrics'll just about run four Oscilloscopes at once – I tested the mains voltage just before B.I.L. came for me last Friday and it was 238 V.

There is ring main distribution, but as I said, it dates from the Jerry Builder age when you only got one socket per room!

Oscilloscope List.
It is all very well having a collection of oscilloscopes. But the problem is to keep them all working. Do others have this problem?
It sometimes has almost beaten me and I'll sell them all. But when you get an old scope restored and working, what a nice glow of satisfaction it produces.
And the scopes seem to appreciate it, as they keep coming here asking for shelter, like refugees.
My list shows the problem:
Telequipment S51, S32A, both ST 5 or 10Mhz valve
D33 DualBeam 6 Mhz; D43 DualBeam 15 Mhz valve,
D63 DualTrace 15Mhz; DM63 analogue storage DT15Mhz,
D67 & D67A DualTrace-Dual Time Base 25Mhz.
D1010 & D1015 DT STB 10 or 15Mhz.
D34 DT 15Mhz STB minature battery
D75, D83 DT 50Mhz,DTB.
Also the CT71 tracer

SELabs: SM111 DT 18MhzSTB; SM112 DT 100Mhz DTB.

Radar: 301 & 302. Both valve ST 6 Mhz.
Metrovic CT52/CT84 valve

Solartron D300-CT316 6Mhz valve
CD1212 or CT484- DT 24Mhz & ST 40MHz, STB,valve
CT436 or CD1017 DualBeam 5Mhz valve
CD1014.3 DB 6Mhz STB; CD1015 ST 15Mhz STB. valve.
CD1740 DualTrace & 4Trace, 50Mhz,DTB.
CD1642 DT 15Mhz STB battery

Tektronix 2230 digital storage, DT 100Mhz,DTB.
453 DT 50Mhz DTB.
212 DT 0.5 MhzSTB midget battery.

Cossor 339 DB; 1035mkIII DB TBdelay; 1039mkII valve
CDU150/CT531 DT 35Mhz,TBdelay,
3000 or CDU160. DT 35Mhz,DTB.
CME110 Biccotest cable tester/TDR.

Hewlett Packard 141A analogue storage with DT 20Mhz DTB, DualTrace sampling 1GHz, 1415 TimeDomain Reflectometer.
HP180A MainFrame vertical and HP180R main frame horizontal, HP182 large screen,
HP181 Main Frame analogue storage and HP184 MF fast writing storage.
Plug ins for DT and 4T 50Mhz and 100Mhz, Differential 40Mhz, Single and Dual TimeBase with tunnel diode and ECL triggering (much better),1Ghz sampling;HP8559A SpectrumAnalyser 21Ghz.
HP1707B DT 75Mhz DTB battery
HP1741 analogue storage DT100Mhz DTB;
HP1740 DT100Mhz DTB.

Advance OS3001 DT40Mhz,STB; OS3500 DT40MhzDTB;
OS4020 digital storage 10Mhz; Gould 4035

Philips PM3261 DT120MhzDTB; PM3262 DT100Mhz DTB; PM3263 DT100Mhz DTB; PM3264 4T 100Mhz DTB; PM3265 DT150Mhz DTB;
PM3310 and PM3311 digital storage 50-60Mhz.
PM3400 Sampling DT 1.7Ghz.

Enertec 5222 DT 40Mhz,DTB.

Many duplicates and also spares for parts.
I have passed a few on to other crazy people, and my wife would like me to pass a few more on.
But it is interesting to see the development of a design idea through several families, which is clear with the Solartron, Telequipment and Philips models.
I have the manuals also, which is quite vital.

Is that the one I sent you DS? Is it still going?

That's a great story Jeremy. The only caps I've had to replace out of several 500 series scopes are the big electrolytics, they're covered in a paper tube. When powering it up next time check the ripple voltages on all the rails as per the manual or better still the resistances to chassis as per manual.you can get at all the rails by removing the RHS side panel. I leave the old caps in place and tack in modern replacements, not very professional but.

Ahhh, so no experiments a la' Photonicinduction Chris, his byline is "one man and a plug socket" though I suspect his is rated for more than 13A. Our house is a bit like yours, built 1876 though the electrics are a tad more modern than that. Still, every time I switch the two 500 series scopes on in a morning the lights dim - disco scopes.

Andy.

I'm afraid not Andy

I use the 465 in Poole and the Trio in Exeter the D61 is the Backup in Poole as I have had some triggering problems with the 465 I need to get on top of.

The rest are in various stores hence there may be more. Very little is on display at the moment except around 80 mostly pre war Cossor radios in Poole. That's only a small traction of the total though.

You kindly picked the Cossor Kit scope up for me and it's on the back burner awaiting a parts mule.

I will at some point be trying to put them in one place for Mug shots!

Cheers
