Default Inrad filters - Purchasing from UK

Has anyone based in the UK successfully purchased anything directly from Inrad (International Radio) recently?

https://www.inrad.net/home.php

For some reason they don't seem to currently accept the UK as a shipping destination. I have tried asking them about it by e-mail, but so far I have had no response.

The problem is that for any shipment less than £135, or the equivalent in local currency, the seller has to register for VAT with HMRC, collect the VAT at source and pay it to HMRC.

These are new rules introduced by the UK at the beginning of January.

When I have tried to buy small ticket items from specialist suppliers, mainly in the US, they say they now no longer ship to the UK.

Yes, I've recently suffered the same problem buying some connectors from an eBay supplier in Germany who seemed prepared to ship anywhere but the UK. Strange world we seem to have created. But I'll steer clear of politics, however tempting.

It seems that one of the most useful possessions today is an address in the EU. Fortunately my son has one, which helped me to solve my problem without troubling HMRC.

Thanks for the explanation. A highly disappointing consequence of the UK having left the EU! I'll have to either seek an alternative supplier or consider shipping via a third party at additional cost.

Kind regards, Richard

I believe the same now applies for the EU (since the start of July), they choose to delay it by 6 months. Maybe US suppliers will also stop sending to the EU too.

Yes some of the new Customs rules are a bit strange, there may be hope around the corner, though. Thomann, who are the worlds largest mail order musical instrument retailer located in a small German village, can now charge all customs/VAT fees at the checkout, removing the need for the courier to charge you before delivery, naturally this also speeds things up.
Naturally for smaller companies I can see there being companies/services set up specifically to help them deal with importing items to the UK and hopefully make this a darn site smoother.

There is another important aspect to the UK and EU import VAT rules. On the one hand, a seller wanting to sell in to the UK or EU can register for VAT there and then has to account for VAT. But there is another option: online marketplaces, such as eBay, Amazon or Aliexpress, have to take care of the VAT, so for small sellers it makes much more sense to sell via one of those than handle the VAT themselves. I do some small sales from the EU in to the UK and, for this reason, do them via eBay. I have closed down my own online shop as a result. The potential for excessive VAT paperwork is thus vastly reduced!

Yes that is true. The intent I believe was to target large US suppliers like Amazon and eBay, who under the previous system were placing the burden on tax collection in the UK/Europe. So the law was changed to shift the burden to the supplier.

The law of unexpected consequences led to the same rules applying across the board, and suppliers whose products are less than £135 have not surprisingly abandoned the UK, and now presumably Europe too.

We'll see how it pans out. Pulling the plug on the UK is one thing - the same thing for the whole of the EU is another.

Not forgetting many postal arrangements around the world have been completely thrown out of kilter by this Covid virus thingy rather than political financing decisions.
